George L. Richon, Lieutenant Colonel (LTC), US Army retired, 56, died Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Montgomery General Hospital from a sudden illness.
Mr. Richon is survived by his wife, Linda, and two children, James A. Richon and Carolyn M. Richon, a sister and brother-in-law Victoria Richon and Jerry Goldman, and his former wife, Barbara Richon. He is preceded in death by his children Allison and Elizabeth Richon, and his parents George L. Richon and Clara M. Richon, who passed away in September 2012.
George was born on January 7, 1957, in Somerset County, New Jersey. He was an Eagle Scout. He graduated from Widener College in 1979 and was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant in the Field Artillery.
LTC Richon retired from the Army in 2002 after serving his country 23 years with distinction. LTC Richon commanded the Army’s Harrisburg Recruiting Battalion, and served in the Deputy Chief of Staff for Personnel’s office in the Pentagon on 9/11. During his career, he was awarded the Legion of Merit, five Meritorious Service Medals, and three Army Achievement Medals. The discipline and patriotism he learned in the Army never left him, as friends and family will attest.
Following his retirement, he served as a program analyst in the Education Service of the Department of Veterans' Affairs. At the time of his death, he worked for the VA National Cemetery Administration.
George was an active member and volunteer for many activities at the Damascus American Legion Post 171. He was the coordinator of the memorial brick program. He was named the American Legion Department of Maryland Montgomery County Council Legionnaire of the Year and Damascus American Legion Post 171 Legionnaire of the Year 2009 –2010.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, March 10, 2013, the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd, Mount Airy, MD. Viewing will be from 2pm to 4pm and from 7pm to 9pm with the American Legion Post Everlasting Service at 8pm.
Family will receive friends at the Damascus American Legion Post 171, 10201 Lewis Drive, Damascus, MD for a luncheon on Monday, March 11th at Noon.
