George Satterly Maharay, 93, of 7401 Willow Road, Frederick, MD 21701, died Sunday, December 8, 2013 at Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick.  He was preceded in death by his first wife, Janet H. Maharay.

He is survived by his wife, Jean W. Maharay; one daughter, Anne L. Bryant of Mt. Airy, MD; two sons, William S. Maharay of Keedysville, MD and C. Edward Maharay of Uxbridge, MA; his sister, Anne S. Eggleston of Lexington, KY; and two grandchildren, Eric C. Olson of Baltimore, MD and Jennifer A. Chang of White Plains, MD, and one great granddaughter.

Born in Newburgh, NY, June 6, 1920, he was the son of the late Arthur O. and Olive Satterly Maharay.  He was a graduate of Oswego State Teacher’s College and New York University where he received degrees in industrial arts education and guidance.  He served in the Army Air Forces for three years, as a trade technician, airplane crew chief and drafting instructor.

He entered the federal government in 1946 and served as a personal officer in the U.S. Military Academy, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Post Office Department, the U.S. Treasury Department and the U.S. Department of Transportation. In 1975 he retired as the Director of Personnel of the Energy Research and Development Administration (predecessor of the U.S. Department of Energy).

He was a member of the National Academy of Public Administration and the American Society of Public Administration.  In retirement he pursued his interest in U.S. Civil War history, writing five books about leadership in the Civil War.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 21, 1:00 p.m. at Homewood at Crumland Farms, Frederick.  The family requests, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to:
