, he was the son of the late George A. and Raymonde MacGillivray. Raised in
Everett
and
Arlington,
MA
, he served in the United States Marine Corps in World War II, serving in the 1st Marine Division on
Guadalcanal
and
New Britain
, and received the Navy Commendation Medal for Valor.
Following the war, he received his bachelor’s degree from
Dartmouth
and master’s degree in cartography from
Clark
University
,
Worcester,
MA
. In 1950 he moved to the
Washington
area and married Gloria Manter, his wife of over 30 years.
Mac was employed by the Central Intelligence Agency and retired as a Division Chief after 32 years in mapping activities, including many years as Division Chief of the
CIA
Map Library. He was a life member and past Vice President of the 1st Marine Division Association. George served as a director and chairman of its Scholarship Fund for several years. After his retirement, he volunteered for 18 years at the Marine Corps Historical Foundation, where he specialized as map adviser and map curator. He enjoyed fishing, baseball and spending time with his grandchildren. He was a member of the Pequossette Masonic Lodge of Watertown MA for over 60 years. George’s family would like to thank the staff of Country Meadows and Carroll Hospice for the care he received over the last five years especially in his last days.
He was preceded in death by his wife Gloria and his sister Suzanne Molloy. He is survived by three children, Jeff of New Hampshire, Jim of Frederick, and Kathy of Silver Spring, as well as five grandchildren, Emily, Laura, Mandy, Holly and Nicole.
A Memorial Service will be held at
Brook
Hill
United
Methodist
Church
, Yellow Springs, MD, on Sunday, December 19 at
2PM
. A reception will follow at the Church. Interment will be at
Arlington
National
Cemetery
at a later date.
