George W. Cooley, 93, resident of Homewood at Frederick and formerly of Hyattstown, MD, died on September 7, 2024 and went home to be with the Lord.
George, son of Franklin C. Cooley and Maggie E. Davis Cooley, was born on September 29, 1930 in Boyds, MD. He attended public schools and graduated from Poolesville High School in Poolesville, MD.
George joined the United States Marine Corps in 1948, serving both on active duty and in the reserves. He was honorably discharged in 1954. He attained the rank of Sergeant and completed the Engineer School course of study, learning the construction trade.
George used his military training in construction to launch a career in residential construction. He built his own house for his wife and family as an early project. He was part of a team that built award winning subdivisions Mill Creek Towne and Laytonia in Montgomery County, MD. He also developed several small subdivisions and built single family homes on his own. In later years he worked as a construction inspector and as a licensed real estate appraiser. George also served on the advisory board of the Mt. Airy branch of Farmers & Mechanics Bank. He also volunteered with his church to build a parsonage for their pastor and family.
As hobbies he owned and raced thoroughbred horses and enjoyed camping and hunting with friends and family.
George is survived by his wife of 72 years, Doris Louise Miles Cooley, son Gordon M. Cooley and wife, Teresa Warfield Cooley of Ijamsville, MD., grandson Adam Warfield Cooley and husband Mitchell Porter of San Diego, CA., granddaughter Allison Cooley Hartwigsen and husband Dustin Hartwigsen and great grandchildren, Noah and Lainie Hartwigsen, all of Frederick, MD. He is also survived by sisters Hazel Elizabeth Crofton and Nancy Faye Dixon and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and siblings John Franklin Cooley, Sr., Calvin Roger (Buddy) Cooley and Ollie Mae Tavenner.
From their first date on May 2, 1948 and their marriage on May 17, 1952, George made Doris the center of his life. They were together at the beginning and end of each day and often during the day, traveling together as George completed his inspection and appraisal work with Doris helping with the paperwork. At Homewood they spent their days together.
