George Anderson, Sr.

Mr. George W. Anderson, Sr. of Frederick, MD passed away on Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at Frederick Memorial Hospital.  He was the devoted husband of 62 years to Irma Zimmerman Anderson.  Born August 7, 1928 in Wilkes-Barre, PA, he was the son of the late William H. Anderson and Mary E. Birk Anderson.
George served in the National Guard.  He worked for the federal government at Ft. Detrick, HEW and retired from NIH.  He was assistant scout leader for many years with the Ft. Detrick Troop 799 and YMCA Troop 1600. He spent many summers instructing at Camp Airy with the scouts.   He was a member of the Frederick Elks Lodge, the American Legion, and St. John Evangelist Catholic Church, where he ushered for many years.  He volunteered his time driving the van for disabled vets to the VA Center and calling Bingo for the Elks. George and his wife enjoyed traveling and camping throughout the United States.  He also enjoyed woodworking, matting and framing, and furniture making.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his sister, Lillian Stocker.  He was preceded in death by brothers, Frank and William Anderson and sisters, Mary Clause, Charlotte DiMaggio, Ann Van Schaick and Elizabeth Muller.
Surviving are sons George W. Anderson Jr. and Carol Shearer, Gregg M. Anderson and wife Doreen, Glenn R. Anderson and wife Lori, daughter Gina M. Gigeous and husband Jerry, grandchildren Richard Stonebraker, James and Maureen Gigeous, Robert and Sandy Gigeous, Christi and Ian Finnerty, along with great grandchildren.
A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Monday, January 13, 2014 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD.  Friends may visit with the family from 1:00 pm until service time.  Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery.
