Gene Hillegas

Gene A. Hillegas, 75, died Monday, February 15, 2016 at his home in Gaithersburg, Maryland. He was the loving husband of N. Virginia Kendrick Hillegas.

Born April 4, 1940 in Schellsburg, Pennsylvania, he was the son of the late Homer and Vera Hillegas.

He graduated from the University of Maryland in 1968 with a BS degree in agronomy. In his early years he worked building golf courses and was superintendent of Green Castle Golf Course. He then worked at Friends House Retirement Community in Sandy Spring, Maryland for 21 years as head of the maintenance department.

In addition to his wife, Virginia, whom he married in 1966, he is survived by his son, Michael Hillegas and wife, Cassey, of Poolesville, Maryland; his grandsons, Chase and Mason; sisters, BettyLee Frederick, Edna May McDowell, Ellen Lamison; brother, Harry Hillegas; sister-in-law, Carolyn Hillegas; and many nieces and nephews who also will miss him.

Gene loved the outdoors and was always the happiest being at his cabin in Pennsylvania.

Memorial services will be held at 12:30 p.m. Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Redeemer Lutheran Church in Damascus, where the family will receive friends one hour prior to services.
