Mr. Gary Eugene Matthews, 68, of Thurmont, died peacefully at his home on Sunday evening, February 1, 2015 surrounded by his family. He was the loving husband of Violet Matthews for 44 years.

Born July 24, 1946 in Thurmont, he was the son of the late William J. and Frances P. (Ott) Matthews.

Gary worked as a painter for most of his life. In younger years, he operated a saw mill. Gary was a life member of Blue Ridge Sportsman's Club. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, feeding deer, and riding his 4-wheeler in the mountains. Additionally, he was a member of St. Anthony Shrine Parish. Above all else, he enjoyed spending time with his family. Gary will be greatly missed.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by three children, David Russell Matthews and wife, Jamie, of Thurmont; William L. Matthews of Sabillasville; and Lori Miller and husband, Christopher, of Cascade; six grandchildren, Melissa L. Matthews, David Russell Matthews Jr., Evan Matthews, Olivia Miller (His Bink), Foster Miller and Gage Miller; three siblings, William Matthews, Jr. of Thurmont, Viola Topper of Emmitsburg, and John Matthews of Frederick; and many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, February 5, 2015 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, February 6 from St. Anthony Shrine Parish, 16150 St. Anthony Rd., Emmitsburg, with Fr. Lawrence J. Donohoo officiating.

Interment will follow at Weller Cemetery.
