Gary David Compher

Gary David Compher, 76 of Frederick, MD passed away October 18, 2022.

Gary leaves behind his beloved bride and wife, Kathleen, with whom he has spent the last 33 years. Gary, born in Frederick, MD, on June 2, 1946, was preceded in death by his parents Atlee and Virginia Compher.

He graduated from Frederick High School in 1964 and was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1966. He faithfully served his country in C Company the 92nd Engineer Battalion and was honorably discharged in 1968 after a tour in Vietnam. In 1977, Gary graduated from Hood College with a bachelor’s degree of Political Science and worked as a human resources director and retired from the State of Maryland’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene in 2008 after 28 years of service.

Duck hunting, fishing, and spending time with his family were his passions. He was the president of the Vietnam Veterans Association Frederick Chapter for 20 years. His work with the VVA helped improve the lives and treatment of veterans.

Gary was loyal and kind, always a jokester, an outdoorsman, and a loving husband, and father.

Gary is survived by his children, Christina, Vallie, Ted (Katie), and John (Kristy); and his grandchildren, Jeremy, Tymber, Shelby, David, Lexie, Emory, and Annie. He is also survived by his siblings, Atlee C. Compher (Mary Ann), Donna Kester (Arthur), and Kevin Compher (Donna).

Gary was preceded in death by his niece, Susan Kester; great-nephew, Jacob Tribbett; in-laws, Richard and Pauline Cover; and brother-in-law, James Cover.

The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 27, 2022, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 28, 2022, at St. Joseph-on-Carrollton Manor Catholic Church, 5843 Manor Woods Rd, Frederick.
