Garrett Larsson Funk, 37, of Frederick passed away unexpectedly on January 2, 2018.
Born August 1, 1980 in Reston, Virginia, he was the son of Laurence D. Funk and Carolee L. Dane. He was a 1998 graduate of Frederick High School. He entered the U.S. Army in August of 2003 and trained as a combat medic. Assigned to the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment, he saw action in Northern Iraq as part of the Operation Iraqi Freedom campaign. His duties and responsibilities included emergency care, evaluating and treating combat wounded and their safe transport to the Camp Sykes installation outside the city Tal Afar. During his duty at Fort Carson, Colorado, he instructed combat lifesavers courses.
Garrett will be fondly remembered by his loving family and many others as a helpful friend with a loving spirit. His many interests included all team sports, target shooting, cooking, stage craft, music, gaming, charity work, and reading the Bible. He was proud of his involvement with Ox Fam, an international charity dedicated to feeding underprivileged people worldwide.
Garrett is predeceased by his mother Carolee. He is survived by his father Laurence and his sisters Kirsten LaRochelle Funk of Savannah, Georgia and Brette Alexa LaRochelle of Williamsport, Maryland, his niece Venice DuPont of Atlanta, Georgia, and his nephew Isaac LaRochelle Mills of Williamsport, Maryland.
Funeral arrangements are entrusted by Stauffer Funeral Home P.A. of Frederick. There will be a private family remembrance followed by cremation. In lieu of flowers, donations in Garrett’s memory may be made to Ox Fam America, the A.S.P.C.A., The Salvation Army, and the Frederick Community Rescue Mission.
