Garel Lester Hauver, 75, entered into eternal peace on Saturday, January 30, 2016 surrounded by his family.
Garel was born on December 16, 1940, the son of the late Clyde Lester "Bud" Hauver and late Margaret Strailman Hauver. He was raised by the late James and Linzie Strailman. He graduated Brunswick High School in 1958. He married his ‘lifetime sweetheart’ Beverly Ann Garrott in 1963 in Brunswick, MD where they have lived happily together for 52 years. He worked at the National Geographic in Washington DC (1959-66), the United States Postal Service in Brunswick, MD (1966-71) and as Postmaster in Point of Rocks, MD (1971-97).
Garel’s love and passion for sports, especially baseball, was shown in his 40 years (1975 - 2014) of writing the sports section of the Brunswick Citizen. He began playing baseball on the Brunswick Men’s Baseball team (1955 - 1963) at the age of 14 in addition to playing on the first Brunswick Babe Ruth team in 1955. His love of the game led to him to manage and coach various baseball teams over a 30-year span in the Brunswick Little League and Brunswick Babe Ruth Pony. He managed the 1987, 13-year old MARVA All Star team that went all the way to the Babe Ruth World Series.
Garel also served as both Vice President and Secretary for the Point of Rocks Ruritan Club during the 1970s, coached Mid-Maryland 8th Grade Basketball (1982-85), and was Treasurer of the Brunswick Babe Ruth baseball of over 10 years.
He is preceded in death by his granddaughter Amanda Lee Hauver.
He leaves his loving memories to be cherished by his, wife of 52 years, Beverly Ann Hauver, son Darrell and wife Leslie Hauver; daughter, Teresa and husband Andy Fitzwater; daughter, Jennifer Hauver; granddaughter, Brandy Hauver; grandsons, Adam, Aaron and Aiden Fitzwater; great-grandsons, Grayson and Landen Frye; sister, Eleanor and husband Rich Crampton; brother, James and wife Linda Barker; and brother, Vic and wife Karen Barker. He will also be remembered by his two beloved dogs, Ike and Angel.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 5th from 2-4 and 6-8PM at the Stauffer Funeral Home, Brunswick, MD at 1100 N Maple Avenue. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, February 6th at 2:00PM where the family will be present to receive friends one hour prior to service time. Pastor Clayton Clark will officiate.
Interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his name to the Brunswick Railroaders Little League at BRLL, 241 East Mountain Road, Knoxville, MD 21758.
