Frieda Levenhagen Stroup, 66, of Mount Airy, Maryland passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, September 10, 2024, at her home. She was the wife of the late Larry E. Stroup who died in 2020. Frieda was born in El Paso, TX, and was the daughter of the late Earl William Levenhagen and Barbara Levenhagen.
She received her Bachelor’s Degree in Special Education from the University of New Orleans, and her Master’s Degree in Deaf Education from Gallaudet University. It was there that she met the love of her life, Larry. She worked for Tilden, Longview and Damascus High School. She was a member of the Maryland State Education Association. During her time as a special needs teacher, she was always dedicated to putting the students and their families first. She was passionate about her students and some with profound challenging disabilities. Frieda would invent ways to help them communicate, learn and help them to do simple independent tasks in ways no one tried before. Frieda was always by Larry’s side helping in the garden and sharing the many vegetables he would plant with their friends and neighbors. They enjoyed harvesting, woodworking, fishing and New Orleans. She enjoyed holidays, visits, and writing cards to her friends and family so they knew how loved and special they were to her.
She is survived by her stepdaughters, Sheri (Stroup) Bowersox and husband, Pernell Bowersox, and Wendy (Stroup) Hawse and husband, Jeff Hawse; her grandchildren, Brian Bowersox and fiancé, Abby McCauley, (PA), Rachel (Bowersox) Murdick and husband, Aiden Murdick, (PA), and Lauren Klingman and husband, Alex Howard, (MA); her sisters, Erika Levenhagen, (TX) Kris Levenhagen, (TX), and Thea Levenhagen and her husband, Keith Skeen, (LA); and a nephew, Kyle Levenhagen, (LA).
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brother, John Levenhagen.
The family is holding a private graveside service and in keeping with Frieda’s wishes, they will host a Celebration of Life party at a date to be determined.
Arrangements are with Stauffer Funeral Home, Frederick. Expressions of sympathy may be offered to the family at StaufferFuneralHome.com.
