Frenis Hoffman

October 23, 1920 — September 20, 2012

Frenis William Hoffman, Sr., 91, of Frederick, passed away at Edenton Assisted Living on Thursday, September 20, 2012 after a lengthy battle with dementia.  Born in Cumberland, Maryland, October 23, 1920, he was the son of the late Frank W. and Clara Sheetz Hoffman.

He married Mabel V. Bishop in Cumberland on July 16, 1939 and they celebrated 73 years of marriage on July 16, 2012.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Wilma Hoffman Woodfield and her husband David of Frederick, MD and a son, Frenis W. Hoffman, Jr. and his wife Faye of Woodbine, MD.  Also surviving are four grandchildren, Forrest Hoffman (Glenda), Mt. Airy, MD, Debra Woodfield, Frederick, MD, Steve Hoffman (Donna), Sandy Hook, CT, and Sharon Woodfield, Frederick, MD, and five great- grandchildren (Rachel Hoffman, Alex Smith, Christian Hoffman, Ethan Hoffman and Colin Hoffman).

Frenis was employed at the Celanese Corporation, Cumberland, MD for 17-1/2 years.  He served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II (1st Division, 18th Infantry) and was awarded the Combat Infantry Badge and the Bronze Star among other awards while serving in the European Theatre.  After graduating from Frostburg State College he taught junior high school science for 25 years in the Montgomery County Maryland Public Schools.  The Hoffman’s purchased a farm in Bedford County Pennsylvania in 1970 and in 2005 they moved to Frederick, MD to be closer to their children.  Frenis was keenly interested in gems and minerals and did jewelry work as a hobby.

He was a member of Ijamsville United Methodist Church, Ijamsville, MD, and a member of the East Gate Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite and Ali Ghan Shriners, past commander of the Legion of Honor, past president of the Shepherds Unit and a Road Runner (transporting more than 30 patients to the Shriners’ Hospital for Crippled Children for medical treatment).

Frenis was a Life Member of the National Rifle Association.  He was a volunteer and a Life Member of the National Education Association, a member of the AARP (past president of the Cumberland, MD and Bedford, PA chapters), past president and zone chairman with the Everett, PA Lions,  member of the Presidents Association at Frostburg State University and past board member of the FSU Alumni Association.  He served as a scoutmaster and assisted in forming Boy Scout troops in both Cumberland and Wheaton, Maryland.

He was the last of his immediate family and was predeceased by his brothers, Wilfred and Lester Hoffman.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, September 25, 2012 at 3 p.m. at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD, where family will receive friends from 1:00-3:00 p.m.  Frenis’ pastor and brother-in-law, Rev. Franklin Bishop, will officiate.  Interment will be held on Saturday, September 29, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. at the Fairview Cemetery, Artemas, PA.
