Frederick William Goundry, Jr.

Frederick W. “Fred” Goundry, Jr., 89, of Mt. Airy, MD passed peacefully at home with his family by his side on June 17, 2023. He was the beloved husband of Mary B. “Bonnie” (née McKee) Goundry.

Born on March 29, 1934, Fred was the son of Dr. Frederick and Genevieve (née Frail) Goundry of Binghamton, NY. He was preceded in death by his brother, Donald Goundry, and his sisters, Dorothy Johnson and Diane Brown.

Fred is survived by his wife and children, Ed (Carol) Goundry of Frederick, Matt (Debbie) Goundry of Mt. Airy, and Jenny (Rob) McCoy of Mt. Airy. He was the most loved “Pop” to six grandchildren: Will (Andi) Goundry, Ben Goundry, Lily McCoy, Luke Goundry, Kate Goundry, and Rachel McCoy; as well as a great granddaughter, Charlie Goundry.

Fred graduated from Binghamton Central High School, attended the University of Michigan (GO BLUE!), and graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in accounting. Along the way, he served in the U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command, and he studied to become a Franciscan priest. After completing his degree, he worked as an accountant, comptroller, and vice president at several businesses and institutions in the DMV region.

Fred and Bonnie recently celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary. He lived in Mt. Airy for the past 52 years and proudly served on the Mt. Airy Planning and Zoning Commission for more than 25 years. He loved music, especially the big band sounds of Benny Goodman and Glenn Miller. He was a talented musician who played the coronet, piano, and clarinet.

Fred enjoyed family gatherings and trips to the family beach house in Ocean Pines. He had endless energy for gardening, home improvement projects, and taking care of his grandkids. He made friends wherever he went. He especially loved cheering for his children and grandchildren in their athletic, academic, artistic, and professional pursuits.

The family will receive friends at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgefield Boulevard, Mt.
