Fred H.Phagan, 87, of Mount Airy, Maryland, passed away on Saturday, March 2, 2024, at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick, MD.  He was the beloved husband of Laurae Phagan for 56 years.
 
Born on July 19, 1936, in Morristown, TN, he was the son of the late James N. and Mary H. (Inman) Phagan.
 
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Kelley Phagan Welty, and Laura L. Phagan, two step-children Roland D. Kerns and Kimberly K. Alu, four grandchildren: Ethan P. Welty, Owen H. Welty, Reilly (Alu) Altman (and husband Sammy), and Thatcher L. Alu, and great-grandson Brooks S. Altman. He will be lovingly remembered as their modern Renaissance Man for his many hobbies and interests from homebuilding, to golf, to gardening, to fishing, boating, and hunting, to daily newspaper reading, to photography, to computers. He loved sharing his interests with his family and was our greatest teacher throughout his life.
 
Fred earned his undergraduate degree from Lincoln Memorial University, where he was inducted into the sports hall of fame. He went on to play minor league baseball for the Baltimore Orioles in the Pensacola league before returning to graduate school and earning his master’s degree from East Tennessee State University. He began his teaching career in secondary education in Wheaton, MD, eventually moving to Montgomery College in Rockville, MD, where he initiated the reading program and taught for over thirty years.
 
Services and interment will be private.
