Mr. Frank Starritt Holmes, 94, of Mt Airy, died on Thursday, January 25, 2007, at Lorien Life Center, Mt. Airy.
He was the husband of the late Eunice Virginia Hilt Holmes who died on April 7, 2006, they were married on February 25, 1939.
Born on February 18, 1912 in Tannersville, VA, he was one of twelve children of the late George Pemberton and Alice Williams Holmes.
He was a 1933 graduate of Mt. Airy High School. In 1948, he founded Holmes Tire Service in Poplar Springs. Three years later he moved the business to 204 E. Ridgeville Blvd. in Mt. Airy and sold the business to his son in 1977. Starritt was a member of Howard Chapel-Ridgeville United Methodist Church, where he was a past president of the Methodist Men; the Mt. Airy Volunteer Fire Company, Inc, the Mt. Airy 55 Plus Club and a former member of the Mt. Airy Lion's Club. Mr. Holmes served 2 terms on the Mt. Airy Town Council and was a 2006 inductee in the Mt. Airy Hall of Fame. He had that rare quality of bringing out the best in people and those who knew him always felt better about themselves after being around him.
Surviving are a son, L. Patrick Holmes and wife Sandra of Mt. Airy; 2 grandsons: James Patrick Holmes of Thurmont and Jon Charles Holmes of Vienna, VA, and a sister, Isabelle Windsor of Mt. Airy as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He will also be remembered by good family friend, Marjorie Van Sant of Mt. Airy
Visitation: The family will receive friends from 7-9 PM on Sunday, January 28, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 E. Ridgeville Blvd. in Mt. Airy.
Services:
Services will be held at at the Funera1 home at 11:00 AM on Monday, January 29, with his pastor, Rev. Donald Howard officiating.
Interment will be in Pine Grove Cemetery, Mt. Airy.
