Frank Long, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully at his home September 29,2013, in the presence of his beloved wife of 64 years, Betty Pryor Long.
"Bud" was born July 16, 1924 in Thurmont, the oldest son of Franklin Clyde Long, Sr. and Ruth Elizabeth (Troxell) Long, in a family of ten children. Mr. Long graduated from
Thurmont High School in 1949; he married Betty Jean Pryor on January 29, 1949.
After graduating, Mr. Long continued to work on the family farm, and then on another farm in Graceham, until 1949, when he began to work for a short time with an uncle doing plumbing. He then worked for fifteen years, with the Curtis Candy Company, providing artificial insemination for cattle,
In 1950, Mr. Long built the family's first home where he and Betty resided for 31 years, and raised their four children. He built their current home in 1981.
Mr Long was a hard-working man and he thoroughly enjoyed working. In 1965, Mr. Long
started Long Construction Company, a general contracting firm, dedicated to building
and remodeling homes, as well as commercial construction. His hard work, humor, skills, talents and determination combined to make him a successful small business owner. He owned and operated his business until retirement. During those years, he was very active with the Frederick County Home Builders Association, and served in various capacities, including Vice-President of the organization.
As a young man, Mr. Long pursued his love of baseball and played with the Tri-County
Team at the "Creagerstown Stadium" built on a "field of dreams" located on his father's
farm on Graceham Rd. Mr. Long coached Little League, and had the special satisfaction of coaching all three sons' teams.
Mr. Long was a member, and avid supporter, of the Thurmont Lion's Club for more than
forty years. He held numerous and various positions. Most recently he retrieved donated eyeglasses from collections site in the area and prepared them for shipment to a distribution center. Mr. and Mrs. Long traveled with the Lion's Club to China, Australia,
San Diego and Minneapolis. They enjoyed a trip to Hawaii with brother and sister-in-law
Ray and Naomi Long in 1981.
He was a dedicated and very active member of the Graceham Moravian Church, which
he joined on April 6, 1941. HE:l served on the Board of Trustees for many years and
assisted with building projects, fundraisers, and programs of the church; he created a
record of the life of the conqreqation through his service as the church photographer. Mr. Long enjoyed photography and he always had a camera handy. He also supported, along with Betty, the meals and fundraisers of other local congregations. .
Mr. Long loved to play golf, and he played regularly after the age of 50 to provide a
respite from the long hours of work required by his business. Card-playing was another
pleasure including family card games, "poker nights" and Tuesday night games of "Pitch" with family and friends. Mr. Long also enjoyed hunting in Garrett County.
In addition to his wife Betty, Bud is survived by his daughter Linda, and husband Bobby
Lingg; as well as Linda's daughter Lalena and husband Daniel Rose, and their children
Judd, LeAnn and Zebul. He is also survived by his son Mark and wife Jill, and their
children Seth and Meghan, and Meghan's husband Peter Kunhardt. Also surviving Mr.
Long is his son Ronald and wife Donna, their daughter Ashley and her husband Chad
Atkins. In addition, Frank is survived by son Kevin and his wife Pamela, along with their
son Troy and daughter Alisha.
Frank was one of 10 children. Surviving him are sisters Bea Keilholtz, Winnie O'Connor, Gloria and husband Marlon Green, and Carole and husband Dan Beauchamp. He is also survived by brothers Gene and wife Shirley, Harold and wife Peggy, as well as Ray and his wife Naomi. Mr Long was predeceased by his sisters Fran Dreith and Libby Auldridge. "Uncle Bud" was also fortunate to have many, many wonderful nieces and nephews.
There will be a memorial service on October 5 at 2:00 pm, with family visitation starting at 1:00 pm, at the Graceham Moravian Church; 8231 Rocky Ridge Rd, Thurmont, MD. The Rev. Sue Koenig will officiate the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial gifts be sent to the Graceham Moravian Church or the Thurmont Lions Club.
