Frank Gardner Lesure

January 28, 1927 — September 3, 2023

Frederick

Frank Gardner Lesure of Frederick, Maryland, beloved husband of Nancy Pearre Lesure, passed away peacefully on September 3, 2023 at the age of 96.

Born in 1927, in Camden, South Carolina, he was the son of John Warren Thomas Lesure and Emma Janet Dart. He spent a fondly remembered boyhood
at Darts Camp in the New York Adirondacks, where he had an entire lake available for his creative projects.

In 1945, the US Army allowed him to graduate from high school in Rustburg,Virginia, before sending him to learn Japanese at Yale University.

He then served in the Counterintelligence Corps in Japan until August 1947.

Upon his return to the U.S., he became a geologist, earning a BS degree in Geology at Virginia Polytechnic Institute in 1951 and a PhD from Yale in 1955. In a long career at the US Geological Survey, he studied mineral resources in the Eastern United States and published numerous reports based on mapping and field reconnaissance in wilderness areas. It was during the early part of his career that he met Nancy Pearre, also a Survey geologist. They were married in Frederick in 1963 and raised two children in McLean, Virginia.

Frank became an avid gardener and genealogist, hobbies that he continued to purse in retirement in Frederick. He and Nancy volunteered for the Historical Society of Frederick County. In 2014, they moved to Homewood, where he kept up walking a mile a day, at first around the grounds and then in the halls of Assisted Living, which, characteristically, he had precisely measured.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years and by two children, Emily Lesure Aubin and Richard Gardner
Lesure, and two grandchildren, Sam and Flora Aubin.

There will be a Memorial Celebration of the Life of Frank G. Lesure in the Chapel at Homewood of Frederick, 7407 Willow Rd, Frederick MD at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 30, 2023.
