Francis "Jack" Patterson

Mr. Francis John "Jack” Patterson, 78 of New Market, Maryland, passed from this life on Thursday, August 2, 2018 at Homewood at Crumland Farms.

Born on October 15, 1939, in New York, NY, he was the son of the late Earl E. Patterson and Edna W. (Winters) PattersonJack is survived by his wife of 54 years, Patricia C. Patterson of New Market, MD, a daughter Katherine Ann Johnson and husband Robert ‘Dwayne” of New Market, MD, a son Robert Sean Patterson and wife Tracey of Ashburn, VA and his grandchildren, Karly Ann Johnson, Kendall Trey Johnson, Griffin Sean Patterson, Elle Katherine Patterson and Kellen Patrick Patterson.

He is preceded in death by his brothers Earl Patterson, Jr. and Robert “Bobby” Patterson and a sister Katherine “Kay” Hulle.Jack graduated in 1960 from Arundel High School in Arundel, MD.  He attended Frostburg State University and graduated with a teaching degree in 1964. While there he played basketball, football and ran track as a student athlete. He completed his master’s degree in 1972.

Jack went on to play semi-pro football for the Frederick Falcons and was part of the Frederick Spires in its inaugural season as Frederick’s semi-pro baseball team in the mid-late 1960’s.

Jack began teaching in 1966 at Middletown Elementary School in Frederick County. He spent his 30+ year career in public school education, holding various teaching roles across Frederick County in physical education, driver’s education and school support positions until he retired in 1999. Within his years as a teacher in Frederick, he coached both boys varsity basketball and baseball. He also coached girls varsity field hockey, where he coached the Catoctin Cougars to a state championship in 1979. Jack continued to be involved in secondary sports for years in both coaching and officiating. He served as Commissioner of Frederick County’s chapter of IAABO, the basketball officials organization.

During his career as an educator, Jack was elected as the President of the Frederick County Teachers Association, a position that he held for two, four-year terms. Jack’s educational service included several years of serving on the Maryland State Teachers Association Board of Directors, as well as Maryland State Delegate to the National Education Association (NEA) at its national conventions.  Teaching students, coaching, and serving and supporting the teachers in Frederick County were great passions in his life.

Upon retirement in 1999, Jack worked part time, while pursuing his passion and love for golf.  He enjoyed spending time with Patti, taking many trips, volunteering at church, vacationing with family, and spending time with his friends and grandkids.

The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick on Wednesday, August 8th from 2:00-4:00pm and 6:00-8:00pm.A celebration of Jack’s life journey will take place at on Friday, August 10th at 11:00am at Evangelical Reformed United Church of Christ, 15 W Church Street in Frederick, MD with Rev. Dr. Barbara Kershner Daniel officiating.
