Frances Copley

Frances Leah Copley of New Market, Maryland passed away at home on March 7, 2014 surrounded in spirit and body by her loving family. A child of the Great Depression, Frances was born on November 8, 1929 in the coal mining town of Mullens, West Virginia. She was the daughter of late James Clayton Cooper and late Clemmie Aliff Cooper. With a lifelong passion for “living on the sunny side of life” Frances will be remembered for the beautiful memories she created with her family, friends and those she met.  Distinctly, she carried herself with grace, wit, ingenuity, and an enthusiasm for life and setting a wonderful example of how to live life.  Frances was one of the great cooks of the family.  She enjoyed trying out new recipes as well as creating her own. In 2003, Frances and her daughter, Karla Ficken established the Frederick School of Cosmetology in Frederick, Md.  Since the school’s inception, she was the School Director and Senior Cosmetology Instructor.  She held a high degree of professionalism and a strong work ethic which she imparted upon her students and those she mentored.  Frances received her cosmetology training at the Adelphi Beauty School in Adelphi, Md., becoming licensed in 1968. Her legacy lives on through the family she and her late husband of 49 years, Joe Clayborne Copley began.  She is survived by daughter Karla Ficken and her companion Richard Linton of New Market, MD, sons Byron and his wife Sharon of New Market, MD,   Kevin and his wife Patricia of Damascus, MD, eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.  She is also survived by her sister Mary and her husband Clair Langston of Sarasota, FL., her brother James and his wife Ada Cooper of Mullens, WV,  sisters-in-law Mary Cooper of Oceanside, Ca., Patricia Cooper of Escondido, Ca. and many nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by son, Joe (Joey) Clayborne Copley II and brothers John Cooper and Samuel Cooper. She will also be remembered by her special friend, Floyd Latlief of Damascus, MD. The family wishes to thank special nieces Brenda Sue Bowen and Margaret Carmella, grand-daughters Carrie Caltrider, Lauren Kelleher, Kristin Copley and Sherri Sitler, RN for Hospice of Frederick County for their special loving care during her time of need. The family invites family and friends for visitation on Wednesday, March 12, 2014 from 3-5 & 7-9 PM  at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD.   Funeral services will be held on Thursday, March 13, 3014, 11:00 AM, at Montgomery United Methodist Church, 28325 Kemptown Road, Damascus, MD, where she was a member.  Interment will be 11:00 AM Friday, March 14, 2014 at Rosedale Cemetery, Martinsburg, WV. In lieu of flowers please make a donation to Look Good Feel Better program co-sponsored by Frederick Memorial Hospital and the American Cancer Society, Frederick, MD.
