Florence Guss

September 24, 1927 — July 27, 2011

Florence Estell (Hasanovitz) Guss of Frederick, MD died on July 27, 2011
after a lengthy struggle with Alzheimer's Disease. She left behind her
devoted husband Maurice, three sons, Samuel Gerald, Michael Lawrence,
and Tuviah Herschel Edward; Tuvy’s' s wife Tracey; grandchildren Michael
David, Joshua Simon, Jennifer Lillian, Jacob Ellis, and Josh and Jenny's
mother Nancy Harrison Guss.

As a child in Boston, MA, she would go directly from school to the YMHA
to take part in the Y activities until it was time to go home as her parents
returned from work
. Her interest in the Y continued unabated as she
matured to adulthood
. After her marriage and subsequent move to
Frederick, MD, Florence's involvement with the YMCA increased
substantially over the years. Her passion and contribution to the Y led her to
become an outstanding board member and to serve as President of the YMCA
Board
. She remained an active and energetic proponent of the YMCA and
its programs until her illness prevented her from further participation
.

Florence Guss' volunteer service to the Frederick community included:

Frederick County YMCA, starting Day Camp Grove, with Roy Okan, served on many Y committees, and was also Mid-Atlantic Region Vice President; President of the Governor's Commission On Children And Youth for Frederick county; Frederick Women's Civic Club; Arts Council for Frederick county; Women In Community Service, President, consultant to Hot-Line, Frederick County Mental Health; The Fredericktowne Players; Frederick County Tourism; Frederick Women's Fair; Baltimore Symphony Orchestra In Frederick, board of directors;
Operation Colposcope, treasurer; Beth Sholom Synagogue, board of
directors; National Council Of Jewish Women, including Vice President and
President
.

The awards Florence received were numerous and include: Hanna G .
Solomon Award For Outstanding Service - NCJW; Certificate Of Merit For
Arts Council Chairmanship - Frederick County Chamber of Commerce;
Outstanding Woman Of The Year Award - Frederick County Business And
Professional Women's Club; Service To Mankind Award

Graveside services will be held on Friday, July 29, 2011 at 1:00 p.m. at Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick with Rabbi Morris Kosman officiating.
