Farid Jamil Ghanayem (Papa Fred or Freddie) of Cortland Manor, Hagerstown, Maryland passed away peacefully at his home August 12, 2017 at the young age of 90.
He was the son of the late Jamil Hanna Ghanayem and Rosa Jorquera Fernandez. Born in Nogales, Chile, South America but was raised in Ramallah, Palestine and immigrated to the United States in 1951. Drafted into the U.S. Army in 1951, he served proudly in the Korean War. After being discharged he worked in the hotel industry as Head Maitre De’ at multiple prestigious establishments in Washington D.C.
He and his wife were also proprietors of Dickerson Market in Dickerson, Maryland and Edisto Food Market in Edisto Island, South Carolina. During his lifetime he traveled extensively through Palestine, Jordan and Chile as well as across the United States.
His true passion for life and what drove him to be the patriarch is his family.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Johnnie Ghanayem. He is survived by his daughter Deborah Frances Ghanayem, Frederick; two sons, Daniel Farid Ghanayem of Monrovia, MD. and Christopher Farid Ghanayem, Hagerstown; five grandchildren, Daniel Nicholas Ghanayem, Jennifer M. Ghanayem, Luke F. Ghanayem, Sean M. Nishihira, Sydney M. Ghanayem; Four great-grandchildren, Aaron Ghanayem, Caden Ghanayem, Lilya Nishirhira and Yuria Nishihira.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick.
Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Thursday, August 17 from the funeral home chapel, with the family receiving friends from 10 until 11 am.
Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
