Eugene E. "Sonny" Grimes
February 10, 1945 — January 7, 2017
Mr. Eugene E. "Sonny" Grimes, 71, of Thurmont, died suddenly Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. He was the husband of Fay Grimes for 41 years.
Born February 10, 1945 in Frederick County, he was the son of the late Milton and Marguerite (Speak) Grimes.
Early in his career, he worked for Thurmont Shoe Factory for 16 years. He retired at age 62 from the Maryland State Highway Department as a truck driver after 25 years of service. Additionally, he was owner/operator of Grimes Lawn Care Service for many years.
Most recently, Sonny was a crossing guard for Thurmont Police Dept. at Thurmont Elementary School.
He was a life member of Graceham Volunteer Fire Co. 18, and a longtime member of Thurmont Guardian Hose Co. 10.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by daughter, Sherry G. Smith and husband, Clinton IV, of Woodsboro; son, Eric E. "Rug" Grimes of Thurmont; five grandsons, Chase E. Smith, Clinton W. Smith V, Dalton E. Grimes, Logan A. Grimes, Grayson W. Grimes; a great-granddaughter, Chloe M. Smith; and many friends.
Sonny will be greatly missed.
He was predeceased by a daughter, Cecelia F. Grimes.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, January 12, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 E. Main Street, Thurmont.
Services and interment will be private.
