Eudora Leonis Matthews, 82, of Thurmont, MD, passed away on October 26 at St. Catherine’s Nursing home in Emmitsburg, MD. She was surrounded by her loving family, holding the hand of Marshall her beloved husband of 66 years.

Leonis was born in LeGore, MD January 1, 1933 and was the daughter of the late Harry A. and Mary L. Young. In earlier years, she was a farmer, a homemaker and later, a special needs bus driver for Frederick County Public Schools. Her proudest accomplishments were wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother.

She was a fine cook, baker and seamstress. She baked prizewinning breads and cakes. She loved animals, flowers, gardening, needlepoint, quilting and crochet. She enjoyed playing the piano.

She was a long-time member of The Oak Hill Church of God. She attended there for most of her life until she was physically unable to do so.

She is survived by her husband, Marshall and her four children and their spouses: M. Douglas Matthews, Jr. and wife Emily of Waynesboro, PA, Richard W. Matthews and wife Karen of Emmitsburg, MD, Althea Wood and husband Gary of Fairfield, PA and Laurie Rerko and husband David of Frederick, MD.

Additionally, surviving are grandchildren: Daniel Matthews and wife Carol, Scott Matthews and wife Kate, Jenifer Mackley, Shannon Neubauer and husband Chris, Kelly Betz and husband Michael, Kathryn Rerko and Christopher Rerko and great- grandchildren: Danielle Pastore, Ethan and Claire Matthews, Breanna Mackley, Jake and Katelyn Neubauer, Zoey and Sophie Betz.

She is survived by her sister Patsy Weller and husband Roland and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her brothers, Edward, Harold and Donald.

The family will receive friends 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday, October 29, 2015 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 104 East Main Street, Thurmont. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. on Friday, October 30th at Stauffer Funeral Home in Thurmont with interment following at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.

The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to the staff at St. Catherine’s Nursing home and Dr. Portier for the excellent care and loving kindness they have shown to all in the family.
