Mrs. Ethel L. Swann, 89, of Mt. Airy, died on Monday July 4, 2011 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Joseph Johnson Swann who died in 1975.
Born on June 24, 1922 in Poplar Springs, she was the daughter of the late Austin Peter and Ethel Meekins Knill.
She was an avid sewer and quilter and was involved with the Mt. Olive quilters. She loved flowers and gardening. She cherished her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and her time involved in their lives. She was a member of Mt. Olive United Methodist Church, Mt. Airy.
Surviving are her children; Joseph Johnson Swann III and wife Linda of Frederick, Thomas Austin Swann and wife Elaine of Mt. Airy and Suzanne Schrider and husband Dana of Mt. Airy. Grandchildren; Joseph Johnson Swann IV and wife Shanda, Michelle Mirabile-Swann and husband Paul, Melissa Gerau and husband Jerod and Mary Crum and husband Jason. Great grandchildren; Karly Brown, Kherstin Sirk, Ashton Gerau, Tristen Crum, Liliana Crum, McKayla Swann, Konner Swann and Anna Swann. One brother, Charles Gordon Knill of Woodbine. Special cousins; Betty Franklin of Woodbine and Louise Howard of Baltimore. Special nieces; Ethel Mae Loevy of Arizona and Nancy Lee Ridgely of Florida. She is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews who she loved dearly and thought of often. She was preceded in death by her brother, Muriel Knill and sister, Mary Catherine Day.
Visitation will be held from 2-4 & 7-9pm on Friday July 8, at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 8 East Ridgeville Blvd, Mt. Airy where funeral services will be held at 11:00am on Saturday July 9, Reverend Art Monroe will officiate. Interment will follow in Poplar Springs Cemetery.
