Dr. Erick A. Snellman, 54, of Woodbine,MD passed away Saturday, August 9, 2014 at John's Hopkins Hospital.  He was the beloved husband of Mary Jo Snellman.

Born on August 31, 1954 in MA he was the son of the late Erick A. and Ruth A. Shaughnessey Snellman.


Erick holds a Bachelors of Science degree in biology from the University of Massachusetts, North Dartmouth as well as a Masters’ degree in mycology from the University of Connecticut.  Upon graduation from his Master’s program he joined the United States Air Force beginning his career as a C-130 Hercules navigator.  He had flying assignments in the Philippines, Japan, and North Carolina, and has over 3000 total flying hours.  Between his flying assignments he taught biology at the United States Air Force Academy where he was an Associate Professor teaching various courses in biology and microbiology.  The Air Force sponsored him for his doctoral degree which he earned at the University of Maryland.  He studied under Dr. Rita Colwell who was also serving as Director, National Science Foundation.  He retired from the Air Force in 2007 and spent one academic year teaching microbiology at The Citadel, in Charleston, SC.  He joined the FDA in 2008  at the Center of Food Safety and Nutrition, Office of Food Safety, College Park, as a Consumer Safety Officer and in the Division of Seafood Safety before moving to the Produce Safety Staff in 2011.  He has published several scholarly articles in areas of microbiology, teaching and research, and currently is an invited review author for three peer-reviewed journals.  Erick was a devoted father and loving husband.  He was also an avid outdoorsman, enjoying both fishing and hunting.  He had a great appreciation for music and enjoyed playing the guitar.  Erick was also the Treasurer for Logan's Boy Scout Troop.

In addtion to his wife he is survived by his children Abby, Logan and Brooke; sister Sandra Baker and husband Tom of MA and nieces Brittany and Ashley; mother-in-law Joyce Meyers of PA; sister-in-law Pam Hostetler and her children Steven, Samantha and Chance; brother-in-laws John and Jeff Pcola and cousins Mark, Paula, Maureen and Debbie.  He will also be remembered by special friends Mike and Lisa Barbaro, Harry Barbaro, Jack O'Neil and Jack Wallace and Brett Singer.

He is preceded in death by his ; grandmothers Amanda Snellman and Mary Shaughnessey his Aunt Edith and Uncle Martin; father-in-law John Pcola.

A Memorial service will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church, 1125 St. Micahels Rd., Woodbine,MD on Wednesday, August 13, 2014 at 10:30AM.  Deacon Cliff Britton will be the celebrant.

Interment will be private.
