Eric Joseph Schimmel, 90, of Bethesda, Maryland recently residing in Frederick passed from this life on Friday, January 8, 2021 unexpectedly.
He was born on December 11, 1930, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the son of Erich Peter Schimmel and his beloved mother Louise Amalie(Jessat) Schimmel. Eric graduated from St. George's High School in Chicago. He went on to receive degrees in Electric Engineering and Business Administration from Northwestern University. He also pursued a post-graduate degree in Business Administration at the University of Chicago Graduate School of Business.
He began his lucrative career with Motorola in Chicago. In his 21 years there he was noted as greatly contributing to the growth of the company. In 1968, he moved his family to Bethesda, MD and became the FCC Liaison Manager and Manager of Technical Programs for Motorola. In 1974 he became Director of Telecommunications for the National Association of Manufacturers(NAM). In 1976 he became the Manger of the Washington Office for Masco Communications continuing his career in government regulation and policy issues relating to the telecommunications industry. He went on to become Vice President at the Telecommunications Industry Association and currently served on the Board for Space Data Corp in Arizona.
Eric also was Executive Committeeman of the Washington, DC Chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers. He was appointed by FCC Commissioner White to Chairman of the FCC National Industry Advisory Citizens Band Radio Subcommittee. He was Washington Editor for the IEEE Vehicular Technology Society Newsletter. He was also a member of the Radio Club of America, the FCC Personal Use Radio Advisory Committee, and the FCC Task Force on World Administrative Radio Conference.
Along with his dedication and accomplished career, he was a dedicated husband and father. His hospitality and care for acquaintances made them friends. He was the ultimate provider determined to offer the best life he could, selflessly, for his family. He will be greatly missed!
He is survived by his lovely wife of 68 years, Mary Ann(Halverson) Schimmel, his five children, Mary Titcomb(Ken) of Wheaton, MD, Eric C. Schimmel(Marjorie) of Germantown, MD, Lisa Large of Blacksburg, Virginia, Jennifer Reynolds(Bob) of London, England, and Christopher Schimmel(JoAnn) of Leesburg, VA. Eric leaves behind 11 beautiful grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends(limited to 10 at a time) from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm on Wednesday, January 13, 2021 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD. He will be cremated and interred in Chicago, Illinois at a later date.
