It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Emajane Hahn Baker, who left us peacefully on January 24, 2025 at the age of 99. Born on January 6, 1926 to Preston and Julia Hahn of Walkersville, Emajane lived a life filled with love, kindness, music, books, a great intellectual curiosity, and unwavering dedication to her family, the family dogs, and her community.
Emajane graduated with honors with a degree in Education from Western Maryland (McDaniel) College in 1947. She taught Math and Science at Walkersville High School. In July 1948, she married Holmes Baker and joined him on the New Windsor family farm raising three sons.
Her commitment to bettering the lives of those around her was evident in her many years of service to her beloved Linganore United Methodist Church where she sang in the Choir, taught Sunday School, and participated in many other ministries.
She returned to the classroom in the 1960’s at Linganore HS, serving in various roles including teaching Math. Later she moved to the Frederick County Vo-Tech Center where she served as Media Specialist. Upon her retirement from the Frederick County School System, she regularly volunteered at Frederick Memorial Hospital assisting patients calm their concerns.
Emajane was the beloved wife to Holmes Baker. Later years provided many opportunities for them to travel abroad and spend countless vacations with family at the Outer Banks.
Life was a moving experience for Holmes and Emajane. They built their dream home on the farm atop their favorite hill. When they retired from farming, a move to Frederick and then to Homewood was in their plans. When she moved to Homewood, Emajane enjoyed singing in the Choir and the comradery of the Homewood community.
Emajane was the cherished mother to Richard Baker (Carol), David Mark Baker (Debbie), and Robert Baker (Ann) and a doting grandmother to Natalie Kessler (Martin), Alyssa Heinz (Brian), Madeline Baker, Christopher Bushong, and Michael Baker (Maria). She also leaves behind eight great grandchildren: Mason, Lily, Harper and Miles Kessler, Connor and Zachary Heinz, Mateo Baker, and Rowen Bushong. She is survived by many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family and friends who will miss her dearly. Emajane was predeceased by her husband Holmes Baker, grandson Nicholas Holmes Baker, and sister Peggy Hahn McEwen.
Her family was her greatest success and reward, and she took great pleasure in spending time with them, creating lasting memories filled with love and laughter. Emajane Baker will be remembered for her compassionate soul, her resilience, and her unwavering love for her family and friends. Her legacy of kindness and dedication will live on in the hearts of all who knew her.
A celebration of Emajane's life will be held at the Chapel at Homewood on Saturday, March 8, 2025 at 11am. Information about the service will continue to be posted on the Stauffer Funeral Home website. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made the Nicholas H. Baker Fund for Special Education at P.O. Box 253, Fulton, MD 20759, or the Maryland Special Olympics.
The family would like to offer a special thank you to the staff at Homewood for their loving care and support of our mother and father for over 20 years.
