Mrs. Elsie Doris “Thompson” Wood, 88, entered peacefully into eternal life on Monday, March 10, 2014 with her daughters by her side. She was married to Harry L. Wood, her husband of 34 years who preceded her on March 21, 1980.
She was born December 18, 1925 the daughter of the late Alfred and Arbutus Waters Thompson in Virginia where she lived in her early childhood. Later moving to Knoxville, MD.
Elsie graduated from Brunswick High School in 1942.
In her younger years, she worked in D.C. after graduation from Strayer Business College in Hagerstown. She worked at the B & O Railroad office in Brunswick as a secretary. In later years she worked at Social Services in Frederick and retired from the Frederick County Health Department in 1989. She was a lifelong member of Bethany Lutheran Church, where she taught Sunday School and was a member of the Sarah Group. She was a room mother at school when her children were young. She also helped with her daughters girl scout troup as an assistant. She was a member of the Rainbow Belles of Frederick, the Petersville Homemakers Club, and the Brunswick Chapter of the Red Hat Society. For many years, she was a volunteer, in the gift shop, at Frederick Memorial Hospital and also at the Brunswick Railroad Museum where she was a docent. She loved her family, flowers, cooking, sewing, music and was an avid reader. She also traveled to many places on bus trips before and after she retired.
She was a loving wife and mother of three daughters, Rebecca “Becky” Clary and husband Jesse of Keedysville, Linda Moser and husband Dwight of Broad Run and Roxanne House and husband Jay of Jefferson. She is also survived by one grandson, Michael Clary and wife Tara, three granddaughters, Stephanie Clary and friend Jay Ward, Kelsey and Kallie House, three great grandchildren, Brooke and Devon Riley and Jesse Clary, two sisters Lorraine Ambrose and husband Ralph of Brunswick, Virginia Fry of Daytona Fl, two sister-in-laws Patsy Thompson and Rose Thompson, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson Kevin Moser and grandson-in-law Derek Riley, two brothers Donald and Clifford Thompson, and brother-in-law Martin Fry.
The family will receive friends at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1100 N. Maple Avenue, Brunswick on Friday March 14, from 2-4 and 6-8 pm. Services will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday, March 15, at Bethany Lutheran Church,109 1st Avenue, Brunswick with Pastor Linda Fernandez officiating.
Interment St. Mark’s Cemetery, Petersville.
