Elna Vann Derato

December 2, 1943 — August 26, 2023

Mount Airy

Elna Vann Derato, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her residence surrounded by her loving family on August 26, 2023. She was born on December 2, 1943, in North Carolina to Johnnie Vann and Sarah Byrum Vann.

Elna had an accomplished career as an Insurance Agent with Boiszelle Insurance Company, where she dedicated 16 years of her life before retiring in 2007. Her hard work and dedication to her profession left a lasting impact on her colleagues and clients alike.

While Elna's career was significant, it was her loving nature and kind spirit that truly defined who she was. She never met a stranger and had a generous heart that touched the lives of many. Elna's strong faith was another pillar of her character, alongside her passion for life. Her distinct laughter had the ability to light up any room and bring joy to those around her.

In addition to being a dedicated professional and a caring individual, Elna cherished her family above all else. Her proudest accomplishment was the life she built with her husband Michael B. Derato, Sr. Their love story began with a whirlwind romance that started on a blind date in November of 1963. Three months later, on Friday the 13th of March 1964, they became engaged and eventually tied the knot on August 22, 1964. Their love for each other remained unwavering throughout their remarkable 59 years of marriage.

Elna's devotion extended beyond her marriage to include their three children: Michael Jr. and wife, Sandy, Penny Chandler and husband, Lee, and Karen Derato. She attended all of their sporting events with unwavering support and love. Elna's dedication as a mother extended into her role as a grandmother to Justin Derato and fiancee, Cierra O'Keefe, Lauren Derato, Cara Pauley and her husband, Sheridan and their son, Theo, Hanna Clerkin and her husband, AJ and their soon to be born daughter, Sage, and Emma Chandler.

In addition to her parents she is preceded in death by her sister, Peggy Brady and two great-granddaughters, Libby and Josie.

Outside of her professional and familial responsibilities, Elna enjoyed a variety of hobbies and interests. She often partook in 10-pin bowling in Frederick with her husband, found solace in the pages of a good book, and cherished the moments spent at the beach.

One of the fondest memories shared by Elna's family is the celebration of their parents' 40th anniversary in 2004. The entire family embarked on a magical trip to Disney, staying at the Grand Floridian. The joy experienced during that trip encapsulated Elna's love for her family and her commitment to creating everlasting memories.

Elna leaves behind a strong support system consisting of her siblings: Ann Crane, Thelma Barnes, JD Vann and his wife, Debbie, Jimmy Vann and his wife, Lou Ann, Jerry Robertson and his wife, Susan, Vicki Daughtrey and her husband, Tommy. She is also survived by several nieces, nephews, dear friends who were considered family.

Elna Vann Derato's legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Her genuine kindness, unwavering faith, and infectious laughter will continue to inspire others to live life to the fullest.
