Ellen Miller, 65, of Ijamsville, Maryland, passed away at home on Tuesday, September 5, 2017 following a 3-year battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).
Born in Scranton, Pennsylvania she graduated from George Washington University, with an undergraduate degree in biology and earned a MS from Johns Hopkins University in Biomedical Engineering. Ellen retired from Leidos Biomedical Research, Inc. in January of this year after a career that spanned 37 years supporting numerous projects, clinical, basic & computational research for the National Cancer Institute (NCI) at the Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research. In 1999 Ellen was appointed Director of Research Programs Administration reporting directly to the President/CEO of SAIC-Frederick. For the next 18 years Ellen was instrumental in the establishment of new scientific programs to support cancer and AIDS research. Ellen was also an exceptional racquetball player, a good golfer, a beautiful downhill skier, and a distance runner who competed in numerous road races and triathlons. Ellen will be remembered for her passion to teaching advanced level mathematics as an Associate Professor at the Frederick Community College, and her being a willing volunteer for numerous local charities. She was the world’s greatest hockey mom, had keen insights on life, a dry sense of humor, and unwavering devotion to her family and friends.
Ellen is survived by her beloved husband of 30 years, Donald Miller, son James “Jimmy” Miller, brother Christopher Cusick and sister Catherine “Ketty” and her husband John Williams.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 PM on Sunday, September 10, at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 11:00 AM on Monday, September 11, at St. Ignatius Catholic Church, 4103 Prices Distillery Rd., Ijamsville. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, Maryland.
