Elizabeth Byrne Colwell

May 1, 1928 — November 4, 2017

Mrs. Elizabeth Louise Byrne Colwell, 89, of Frederick, MD, and formerly of LaGrangeville, NY, died Saturday November 4, 2017 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. She was the wife of the late Frederick Thurston Colwell, whom she married in 1954 and who predeceased her in 1971.
Born May 1, 1928 in Hollywood, California, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Dorothy (Kingsley) Byrne and was raised by her loving family in Gaithersburg, MD.
Mrs. Colwell began her career as a librarian right after high school at the Gaithersburg (Maryland) Public Library where she was instrumental in the start of the Book Mobile. Later she worked as the librarian at Arlington High School in NY, and then at the Tempe (Arizona) Public Library.  She remained a life-long avid reader.
She was an active member of Trinity United Methodist Church in LaGrangeville, where she began the Summer Bible Schools. Upon retirement, Mrs. Colwell spent time with family and then returned to live in Frederick 17 years ago.
Times spent with her family were most important to her, and she especially enjoyed spending the holidays with her daughters and being with all of her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by four children, George Colwell and wife, Carol, of Hyde Park, NY and Springhill, FL; Arthur Colwell and wife, Virginia, of Louisville, KY; Lydia Colwell Moreland of Inwood, WV; and Anne Colwell Hamill and husband, Gerald, of Lancaster, PA and Ocean View, DE; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; her brother, Bob Byrne of Wilmington, NC; and her caregiver Nicole Brubaker and daughter Dakotah.
Services will be held at a later date in LaGrangeville, NY at the convenience of the family.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to DayBreak Adult Day Services in Frederick MD where Mrs. Colwell spent many happy days with the caring staff and her friends. http://daybreakadultdayservices.org.
