Elizabeth (Bette) G. Spencer, of Towson, MD. A former resident of Frederick, Maryland for over 40 years passed from this life peacefully, surrounded by her family on Wednesday, September 20, 2017. Born on September 3, 1932, in Greensboro, Pennsylvania. She was the daughter of the late Mary Pearl Kramer Gorman and Emmerson Lee Gorman.
She was the wife of 46 years to the late Marvin G. Spencer.
Bette graduated from Mapletown High School and graduated from Business College in Morgantown, West Virginia. After college she worked as a secretary in the Agricultural Department at West Virginia University where she met and fell in love with her husband, Marvin G. Spencer.
She held various positions during her life. She was the Assistant to the Chief of Police in Frederick County, the Executive Assistant to the Frederick County Board of Realtors and an apartment manager for Parkview Apartments until she retired in 1997. Bette had a true gift for organization. Everyone that knew her enjoyed her expertise in this area. Her family and friends cherish the many memories they have of Bette, who planned and executed many celebrated events and activities.
She was chairman of First District Frederick Junior Woman's Club and a former member of the Frederick Baptist Church.
Bette was an excellent hugger, avid flower gardener, reader, cross word puzzler, scotcharoo maker and red velvet cake baker. She had a great sense of humor and an amazing smile that made everyone feel welcomed.
She was a loving, understanding, forgiving, patient and tolerant mother of two sons and a daughter; Rick Spencer and his wife Lorraine of Ashburn, Virginia, Robert Spencer and his fiance, Melyndia Davis of Eldersburg, Maryland; devoted daughter and dedicated caregiver, Susan Akehurst and her husband Don of Towson, Maryland. Grandmother of Erica and Ryan Spencer, both of Ashburn, Virginia; Deni and her husband Dan Gonsalves of Viera, Florida, Grant Spencer of Pensacola, Florida, Erica and Ashley Davis both of Eldersburg, Maryland, Kristi Thomas and her husband Drew of Columbus, Ohio. Great grandmother of Connor and Hayden. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews and many life long dear friends.
In addition to her husband, she is predeceased by her sister Mary Lee Haugen, brothers, Bill and Jim Gorman, and brother in law, Gary Spencer.
The Spencer family would like to express our immense and eternal gratitude to her daughter Susan and her husband Don for providing a loving home to Bette for the past 10 years and for providing the most loving care anyone could hope for in the last few years as her illness progressed. There are no words to properly express our gratitude. Hugs forever.
The family would also like to thank her wonderful dedicated care team, Dr. Rahnama, Dr. Rizo, Physical Therapist, Aise and Jackie, Maria, Chrystal, Carol, Anna, Milka, Gail, Marion, and Lily, as well as our friends and family.
The family will receive friends from 3:00 pm to 5:00 pm and 7:00 p.m.to 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD.
A celebration of Bette's life journey will take place at 11:00 am on Saturday, September 30, 2017, at Stauffer Funeral Homes, 1621 Opossumtown Pike in Frederick, MD.
Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick, MD.
