Elizabeth Carlson Wakefield, 88, died on September 25 at Frederick Memorial Hospital. Born in Concord, New Hampshire, she was the daughter of Ernest and Rosalie Carlson. Betty graduated from Concord High School in 1942, leaving shortly after to work as a secretary for the War Production Board during World War II. Returning to New Hampshire after the war she married her childhood sweetheart, Harold M. Wakefield, in 1946. They lived in Colorado Springs and New Hampshire before moving to the Washington, D.C area in 1949. In 1955 they moved to Annandale, Virginia. Betty worked as secretary of their church, Little River UCC in Annandale for 10 years, and as a secretary at JWK International. After retirement, she and her husband moved to Lake of the Woods in 1986, finally moving to a cottage at Homewood at Crumland Farms in Frederick in 2000.
Possessing a great zest for life and a positive attitude, her great loves were her family, cooking, reading, animals, and the first snowfall of winter. She spent many hours volunteering in every community in which she lived and was a devoted welcome desk volunteer at Homewood until the last weeks of her life.
She is survived by son Michael and his wife Cathy of Chadds Ford, PA; daughter Wendy and her husband Dr. Emilio Valdes of Hockessin, DE; son Mark and his wife Mary Owens of Frederick; and son K.C. and his wife Debra of Clayton, NC. Also surviving are grandchildren Kerri and husband Julio, Kevin, Andrew, Kevin, Katie and husband Drew, and Carter. And she is held in loving memory by a large extended family in New Hampshire and Sweden. She was preceded in death by her brothers, Robert and Conrad, and by a sister, Alice.
A service in celebration of her life service will take place at the chapel at Homewood at Crumland Farms on Saturday, September 29, at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Homewood Foundation (P.O. Box 250, Williamsport, MD 21795), Christ Reformed UCC (Box 333, Middletown, MD) or the Frederick County Humane Society (FCHS, 217 West Patrick St., Frederick, MD 21701).
