Elizabeth Long Sousa of Charleston, SC passed away peacefully at her home in Ijamsville, MD surrounded by her loving family early on Tuesday morning, November 8th, 2016. Lisa is survived by her loving husband Victor A. Sousa and three daughters Catherine Sophia Sousa of Elkton, MD, Caroline M. Flynn of Charleston, SC, Elizabeth M. "Molly" and John Perry of Spartanburg, SC. Lisa was the daughter of Elizabeth Tecklenburg Long and Leonard Lawrence Long. She was born in Charleston, SC on September 3, 1947.
As the second child in a family of 8, Lisa lived a wonderful life in Atlanta and Charleston. Her upbringing was always a favorite subject, as Lisa loved to share memorable stories from her childhood. Summers at Sullivan's Island were cherished memories that Lisa and her family never forgot. Lisa graduated from D'Youville Academy in Atlanta then received a Bachelor of Arts degree from the College of Charleston. She went on to receive Masters Degrees of Fine Arts with a focus in Print Making as well as a Masters of Education from Georgia State University.
There will be a mass of Christian Burial celebrating her life held at Saint Ignatius of Loyola in Ijamsville, MD on Saturday the 12th, 2016 at 10am. The burial will be at 1pm at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Silver Spring, MD. Visitation will be held on Friday, November the 11th from 5-7pm at Stauffer's Funeral Home in Frederick, MD.
Lisa and her husband, Victor, met, married and lived in Charleston, SC for 6 years, then moved to Maryland, where they have lived ever since. Lisa began her teaching career in Charleston and continued in Maryland, spanning several public schools within Montgomery County, and impacting thousands of children over the years. Lisa was a highly gifted and accomplished artist, mastering print making, ceramics, painting and watercolor, as well as innumerable other techniques and mediums. Lisa was truly adored by her students, inspiring many to become artists themselves. Lisa received many recognition of her talents, including Teacher of the Year. Lisa was known for her very popular Art Club, as well as a favorite choice for Parent Volunteers, and her many beautiful art shows were widely attended.
Lisa valued beyond all things her close relationships with family and friends, whom she never failed to remember. Lisa was known for her infectious laughter and sense of humor. Her gracious and generous attitude endeared her to all who knew her. She always loved getting together with friends and family, and particularly enjoyed her time with her “Bunco Babes”, whose support has been unparalleled throughout her illness.
Lisa is survived by her 6 grandchildren, Foster P. Ouzts, A. Ivy Anderson, Emily M. Anderson, Ellis T. Ouzts, Logan G. Flynn and Lawton C. Flynn. She will always be remembered by her brothers and sisters, Leonard L.Long and his wife Anne O. Long, Amelia L. Walker and husband William P. Walker, Henry T. Long and his wife Kathryn H. Long, John Charles Long and partner Jane Stoney Cook, Robert H. Long and Julie B. Long, Walter L. Long, Polly L. Carter and husband Richard B. Carter. She is also survived by sister-in-law Haydee B. Barletta and Husband Omar Barletta, as well as her husband's father, Joseph C. Sousa. Left to always cherish her memory by numerous loving nieces, nephews and godchildren.
Victor's unsurpassed love and devotion which he showered on Lisa brought her great comfort and joy in her last years.
We shall never forget the good and kind feelings given to us so often and lovingly by our Mom, our beautiful Lisa-Mother, Wife, Sister, and friend.
