Elizabeth (Liz) Matilda Barclay Johnson died peacefully at FMH in Frederick, MD on October 23, 2010. Born on April 6, 1929 in Beaumont, Texas, she was the daughter of the late Emanuel R. Barclay and Rosa Barclay. Preceding her in death is her brother Hiram Barclay and sisters Ella Mae Jackson and Mary Powell.
Elizabeth was a 1944 graduate of Charlton Pollard High School of Beaumont, TX. Before her marriage to John Robert Johnson of Ijamsville, MD, Elizabeth’s life was that of a military wife traveling extensively around the world living in England, Germany, Japan and the United States. Finally residing in Oakland, California where she became a foster care mother and cared for hundreds of children. Upon renewing her licenses in Frederick County, MD, she continued her love and care for many foster children until her illness. She also worked for the Sheriff’s Boy’s Ranch in Buckeystown, MD.
Elizabeth was a faithful member of Sanctuary Progressive Church of God in Christ (COGIC) pastored by Bishop Paul Kemp and First Lady Diane Kemp. She became the first Mother of the Church; was an Evangelist and choir member. Most importantly she became one of a group of Prayer Warriors praying together each and every morning. To mention special friends here would be too numerous.
Liz believed in family integrity. Loving visits from her children and her many grandchildren and great grandchildren. Left to celebrate her life is her loving husband John Johnson, four children; Larry C. Gee Sr. and wife Mable, daughter Monique Gee Brown and husband Reverend Peter Brown, daughter Kenesha Hodges Monroe and husband Tim (all of Maryland) and Kenneth Hodges of Oakland, CA. Step-children; Kimberly Onley, Dana Sherred, Beth Johnson and special foster son Kewannie Mbaye, eleven grandchildren, sixteen great grandchildren, a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special God Daughter Brittany Bowie.
A public viewing will be held on Friday October 29, 2010 from 6-8pm at the Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD. 21702 were homegoing services will be held on Saturday October 30, 2010 at 10:00am, with Bishop Meryle Lyles and Rev. Constance Smith officiating.
Interment will follow in Resthaven Memorial Gardens, Frederick.
