Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Day, 87, formerly of Kemptown, Maryland, passed from this life on Jan. 13, 2019, at Northampton Manor Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was predeceased by her husband, Kelsel Williams Day, Jr., who passed away in 1992.
The eldest child of George and Mary Currens Lockard, Betty was born in Eldersburg, Maryland, on Dec. 22, 1931. After graduating from Frederick High School in 1951, she married her high school sweetheart, Kelsel, on Aug. 24, 1951. They lived in Anchorage, Alaska, during part of Kelsel’s tour of duty with the U.S. Army.
Betty was a devoted wife, mother and homemaker. She was involved with the Parent Teacher Associations of New Market Elementary and Linganore High, which her children attended. At Providence United Methodist Church in Kemptown, she was active in the Women’s Society and church choir, and always helped with annual church picnics, suppers, and the church’s traditional apple butter making, as well as other church activities.
Betty was an avid duckpin bowler in leagues in Damascus and Mt. Airy. She enjoyed playing cards, reading and doing crossword and word search puzzles, and was a fan of the Baltimore Orioles, Maryland Terrapins, and Linganore Lancers. She also spent many hours listening to Kelsel play trombone with the Browningsville Cornet Band.
She enjoyed going to the beach and traveling to destinations around the continental U.S., Alaska, Hawaii, and Europe, and taking cruises to South America, the Caribbean, and Cancun. She collected Longaberger baskets and visited the company’s factory in Ohio several times.
Betty is survived by her daughter Gayle Swenson and her husband Kris, of Damascus, Maryland; her son Kevin Scott Day and his wife Ellie of Jefferson, Maryland; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; her brother Charles William (Buck) Lockard and wife Betty Lou of Middletown, Maryland, and many nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her sister Pauline "Polly" Jones and brother Calvin Lee Lockard.
The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM on Saturday, January 19 at Providence United Methodist Church, 3716 Kemptown Church Rd., Monrovia, Maryland, where the funeral service will begin at 11:00 AM. Internment will be in the church cemetery. A luncheon in the fellowship hall will follow.
