Elaine M. Mate, 73, of New Market, Maryland passed away tragically on Tuesday, August 1, 2017 in Nassau, Bahamas.
Born on September 23, 1943 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of the late Michael and Margaret Stefan. She is survived by her beloved husband of 53 years, Joseph J. Mate; son Joseph M. Mate and his wife Aleta; daughter Susan Mate King and her husband Dennis King and grandchildren Allison and Emily King; and her sister, Janet Primm of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania.
Elaine was a homemaker for her two children. When the kids were older, she began her career working at Schabacker Investment Management in Rockville, Maryland. She worked at Schabacker’s for five years as an administrative assistant. She then began employment with Marriott International in the corporate headquarters in Bethesda, Maryland. Elaine worked in the procurement and purchasing division for Marriott gift shops worldwide. She worked for Marriott for twelve years. Elaine then went to work for SPC Financial in Bethesda, Maryland. She was the personal assistant to the company President. Elaine worked at SPC Financial for seven years after which time she retired and moved to New Market, Maryland.
In her retirement, she was an active member of the New Market Garden Club, the Greenview Community, the YMCA Water Lillies and the Frederick Rescue Mission. For the New Market Garden Club, she was the Treasurer for two years. In the Greenview Community, she was active on the social committee, played bridge in multiple groups and also played mahjong regularly. Elaine was a bi-monthly volunteer in the soup kitchen for the Frederick Rescue Mission.
While she enjoyed all of those activities her family came first. What she loved most was spending time with her grandchildren – Allison and Emily.

A visitation will be held Sunday, August 20th at Stauffer Funeral Home in Fredrick, Maryland (1621 Opossumtown Pike) from 2-4 and 6-8. A memorial mass will be held on Monday, August 21st at 11:00 am at St. Ignatius of Loyola Church in Ijamsville, Maryland (4103 Prices Distillery Road). Burial will take place at Arlington National Cemetery on Monday, September 25, 2017 @ 2:00 pm.
