Edwin "Ed" Itnyre

Edwin "Ed" Recher Itnyre, 85, of Boonsboro, Maryland, passed from this life on Friday, April 26, 2013, at the Meritus Medical Center in Hagerstown, Maryland.

Born on January 25, 1928, in Boonsboro, he was the son of the late Earl R. and Margaret E. (Recher) Itnyre.

Ed graduated from Boonsboro High School and went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from the former Strayer College in Washington, DC. Later he earned a bachelor’s degree in Economics from George Washington University, where, additionally, he completed a year of graduate study in International Economics. At George Washington University, he also enrolled in Law School and was awarded his Juris Doctor degree and was admitted to practice law in both Maryland and the District of Columbia.

He served in the United States Army following World War II.

He began his professional career with the Federal Government as a management intern with the Navy Department. He served first as a contract specialist in major weapons acquisition and advanced to supervisory and review positions. He later accepted a position as the Head of the Contract Division of the Post Office Department and also served as the Contracting Officer. At the time of the energy crisis, he went to work with the Department of Energy, where he served in several positions of contract management, one of which included the responsibility for acquisitions in establishing the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He retired from the Department of Energy in 1985 as a member of the Senior Executive Service.

Ed was a member of Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in Boonsboro and the Boonsboro Lions Club, where he was instrumental in forming the Boonsboro Lions Foundation. He was also a member of the Torch Club and delivered for Meals on Wheels.

He was active in several historical groups during his retirement years. He was a member of the Boonsboro Historical Society, the Rural Heritage Museum, and the Hagerstown Civil War Roundtable. He served for many years on the Washington County Historical Advisory Committee, as well as the Antietam Battlefield Advisory Committee.

Ed was a student of local history and was active in establishing an extensive record of his family history. For many years, he was active in his annual high school class reunions, having served on many committees. He and his wife retired on an old unimproved hill farm and restored a log cabin, as well as the various outbuildings, to such condition as to receive listing recognition by the National Register of Historic Places. Ed enjoyed sharing his love for this restored Rohrersville property with friends and family, particularly his grandchildren.

Over the years, Ed and his wife also enjoyed the opportunity to visit many places throughout the world. Enjoying classical music, especially opera, he and his wife attended numerous performances in both nearby and distant cities.

Ed is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Lena May (Bradley) Itnyre; two daughters, Susan Glick and husband Bruce of Kensington, Maryland, and Kathryn Medley of Rohrersville, Maryland; two brothers, Nelson E. Itnyre and wife Peg, and Jerry L. Itnyre and wife Nancy, of Boonsboro; and five grandchildren, Aaron Glick, Renee Minnick, David Glick, Ashley Medley, and Bethany Medley. He is also survived by great granddaughter Audrey Katherine Glick.

Ed was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Margaret Vanlaer, whose husband Eric resides in Washington, DC; and a sister, Norma M. Itnyre.

A funeral ceremony will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, April 30, 2013, at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 64 South Main Street in Boonsboro. Rev. Joseph I. Donovan, III and Rev. Beth Long will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at the Boonsboro Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. on Monday, April 29, 2013 at the Bast-Stauffer Funeral Home, 7606 Old National Pike in Boonsboro.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to any organization to which Ed belonged or to Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church.
