Edward Gilbert Plourde II passed away at his home February 15, 2021. Born June 12, 1929 to parents Della Lorretta Bushey and Edward Gilbert Plourde I, he was the mischievous boy from East Hampton Massachusetts that would go on to travel the world even becoming the first to surface at the North Pole aboard the USS Skate. Born to serve, as a teenager he volunteered for shore watch perhaps sparking his love for submarines. He went on to join the Navy and serve aboard nuclear submarines throughout his Naval career. Ed was a close friend to his fellow sailor, and he enjoyed boxing and nights on the town. Ed saw the world and was adored by those fortunate enough to hear his stories. His most proud was that of his beloved wife, Carolyn, and their children Kimberley, Edward Gilbert III (Joby), Lori, and Robert. Upon retiring from the Navy, the family settled in Mount Airy, MD, and he began a second and third career only leaving recently to spend every moment with Carolyn. He enriched the lives of his grandchildren, although he would say it was the other way around. He was made of New England Granite, and he was the rock of his family.
He is predeceased by his parents Della and Edward, wife Carolyn (Keenan) Plourde, brother Robert Plourde, and son Edward Plourde. He leaves behind his Children Kimberley Gutjahr and husband Bob Gutjahr, Lori Plourde-Cunningham, and Robert Plourde, more cherished Grandchildren than can count, and even more great-grandchildren. For the many that loved Ed dearly, please be comforted in the long legacy of love that always encircled him and lives on in all of you.
