Mr. Edward Cornell Hedges, 11 Georgetown Road, Walkersville, most recently at Tranquility at Fredericktowne, died October 6,2010. He was the husband of Grace Rice Hedges, his wife of 62 years. Born near Myersville, MD on July 15, 1926, he was the son of the late John H. Hedges and Mary Blumenauer Hedges.
Mr. Hedges was a graduate of Middletown High School, class of 1944. He served during World War II with the U.S. Naval Armed Guard. His three brothers also served at the same time, all
returning home safely. Ed was employed with C&P Telephone Co. for 32 years, retiring as maintenance supervisor in 1985, having missing only one day of work during that time.
He was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church, Walkersville, and served on the church council; a life charter member of AM VETS Post #9, Middletown; a life member of Glenn W. Eyler Post 282 American Legion, serving on the board of directors; a life member of Walkersville Volunteer Fire Co.; a member of the Walkersville Volunteer Rescue Service, VFW Post 3285 and the Telephone Pioneers of America. He was also a former member for many years of the Glade Valley Lions Club and served Walkersville for many years as a Town Commissioner.
In later years he enjoyed gardening, walking, golfing and riding his bicycle. Ed will be remembered for his willingness to help family, friends and neighbors.
Serving in addition to his wife are: son, Gary E. Hedges and wife Cecilia of Frederick; daughter, Brenda G. Hedges, Woodsboro; grandson, Brian E. Hedges and fiancee Keesha Lawrence, Arlington; granddaughter, E. Lauren Larkin and husband Chris, and great-granddaughter, Alana, Santa Barbara, CA; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Ed will be remembered by a special friend, Marsha Thompson.
His brothers John H. Hedges, [r., Carroll L. (Pete) Hedges, and Richard Hedges all
preceded him in death.
A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 14 W. Pennsylvania Avenue, Walkersville at 11:00 AM on Saturday, October 9, 2010, followed by a time for remembering and refreshments at the parish hall. Internment will be private at Glade Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Mark Foucart.
In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances may be made to the organization of ones
choice.
