Mr. Edward Charles Gibson died Saturday, January 11th, 2014 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation. Born on August 5th, 1922 in West Ham, England, he was the son of the late George W. and Clara Frances Gibson.
During WWII he served with the British Army in N. Africa. In the early 50s, he followed an elder brother and came to the United States and worked as a photoengraver in New York City. In 1958, he met Nellie Lucille Wills of Frederick. They were married in December of that year and lived in Paramus, N.J. where she taught school.
In 1968, they moved to Frederick. On a subsequent trip to England they discovered the joy
of horseback riding at the home of friends who had a riding school and were inspired to open
one in Frederick. Building stables and a pole barn on their Ford Road farm, Mr. Gibson and
his wife opened the Frederick Riding School in 1972.
Ever the English gentleman, Ed would burst into song whenever someone said a word which would spark a tune. He had a phenomenal memory and would reminisce about times gone by. One special memory he shared was about going to Wembley as a teenager to watch England play with more than 100,000 people standing in the terraces - all wearing jackets and ties and no fighting. How things had changed was a great disappointment for him. He was an avid West Ham United Football fan and would receive newspaper clippings and programmes in the mail from England.
Surviving are his sister, Clara Dorrington of Chelmsford, England, sister-in-law, Rene Gibson of Witham, England, sisters-in-law, Betty Gibson, Francis Federline, Barbara Stone, Betty Chase and Mary Wills of Frederick and Delores Urey of Florida, grand-niece Bridget and husband Nigel and their three sons, Aaron, David and Joshua of Frederick; and a number of nieces and nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews living in the USA, England, South Africa, New Zealand and Australia.
Mr. Gibson was predeceased by his wife of 49 years, Lucille; sisters Gladys Nancolas of
London, England and Irene Tilley of South Africa; and six brothers: George, Albert, James, John, Stanley and Ronald.
Mr. Gibson's ashes will be interred at his wife's grave site during the summer and a special tea in his memory will be held for family members and friends at that time.
