Dwight Scott

Dwight Lewis Scott passed away on December 19, 2018. He was born on August 27, 1931 in
Washington, DC. His parents were Ira Dwight and Mildred Lewis Scott. Dwight was
predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Miriam Hon Scott, mother of his children; his second
wife, Helen Miller Scott; and a grandson, Evan Scott Brookman.

Coach Scott is survived by children Susan Scott, John Scott (Stephanie), Jean Scott (Michael
Brookman) and Jim Scott (Kim); stepchildren Mark Miller (Tammy), Mike Miller (Kim), Matt Miller
(Sandy) and Regina Miller Costlow. Others are grandchildren Kyle Scott and Samuel Brookman;
stepgrandchildren Nicholas Miller, Lindsay Miller Sunzeri, Trevor Miller, Rachel Costlow, Jenna
Miller and Sydney Miller; his sister Sylvia Lukemire, and a niece, Cathy Lukemire Ratcliffe.

Dwight Scott was graduated from Washington-Lee High School in Arlington, VA; Western
Maryland College, and the University of Maryland, College Park. While at Western Maryland,
he played on the 1951 undefeated football team and served as co-captain of the track and field
team. Scott served in the US Army from 1953-1957, including the final two years of the post-
WWII Occupation of Germany.

Coach Scott spent his primary years as an educator at Boonsboro High School, Boonsboro,
MD, where he served for 37 years as physical education teacher, coach, and athletic director
(final 19 years). He started the football and track and field programs there in the school year
1959-60. Highlights of his time as head coach of the football, track and field, and cross country
teams include: Football - ten league or district championships, including two undefeated
seasons (1968 and 1969); Girls Outdoor Track and Field - five state championships; Girls Cross
Country - also five state championships. After retiring in 1996, Coach Scott was a volunteer
assistant for the Boonsboro High School track and field program for 22 years.

“Scotty” was also a member of the IAABO Board #24, Western Maryland and the Panhandle of
West Virginia, as a basketball official for 20 years. As a member of the National Federation of
High Schools and USATF, he also officiated at track and field and cross country events for 20
years. Coach Scott was the Maryland recipient of the NFHS 1985 Coach of the Year Award for
Track and Field. He was inducted into the Washington County (MD) Sports Hall of Fame in
1989.

Dwight Scott was a member of the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church in Frederick, MD and of
the Clopper-Michael Post 10 of the American Legion in Boonsboro, MD. He was formerly a
member of Covenant United Presbyterian Church of Hagerstown, MD.

Memorial donations to the Dwight Scott Scholarship Fund at Boonsboro High School may be
sent to the Community Foundation of Washington County. A Celebration of Life will be held on
Saturday, January 19, 2019 at 10:00 am at Boonsboro High School.
