Dr. Robert W. "Dr. Bob" Wannemacher, Jr., a generous and faithful servant to the Lord, died Sunday, October 7, 2012 at Citizens Care and Rehabilitation Center. He was 83 years old and the loving husband of Martha A. Merry Ankney Wannemacher.
Born January 12, 1929 in Hackensack, NJ, he was the son of the late Robert W. and Ruth A. Wannemacher.
Dr. Wannemacher received his B.S. degree from Wagner College in New York in 1950 (where he was a member of the Heritage Society); his M.S. from Rutgers University in 1951; and his Ph.D., also from Rutgers, in 1960. While completing his education at Rutgers University, he was a Research Associate from 1951-1960; an Assistant Professor from 1960 until 1964; and then he was an Associate Professor from 1964-1969.
Dr. Wannemacher's 40 year career in Biochemistry at Ft. Detrick began in 1969 as a Research Chemist for the Physical Sciences Division at the United States Army Medical Research Institute for Infectious Diseases (USAMRIID). He held that position until 1980 at which time he became a Supervisory Research Chemist in the Toxinology Division at USAMRIID. In 1994, he worked as a Research Chemist (Assistant Chief Toxinology Division), retiring September 30, 2001. He continued for a few more years as a Contract Scientist VI at USAMRIID for the Anteon Corporation. He holds multiple patents for biochemical warfare vaccinations, and had numerous journal publications during his tenure as a biochemist.
In addition, he has held several advisory and consultative positions for the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, the Journal of Nutrition, the American Society of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition, and the International Society of Toxinology. He was an invited reviewer for Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, Proceedings of the Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine, Metabolism, and American Journal of Physiology. In appreciation for Dr. Wannemacher's professional work and contributions, a room is dedicated to him at Ft. Detrick with a plaque bearing his name.
Dr. Wannemacher held society memberships in several science organizations, among those, the American Association for the Advancement of Science; a 52-year member of the American Chemical Society, Subsection-Division of Biochemistry, Division of Agriculture and Food Chemistry; American Federation for Clinical Research; American Institute of Biological Research; Association of Official Analytical Chemists; Biophysical Society; and Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. He also held memberships in American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (Full Member) and American Institute of Nutrition (Full Member); International Society of Toxinology; New Jersey Academy of Science; New York Academy of Science; Radiation Society; Society for Experimental Biology and Medicine; and Society of Toxicology (Full Member).
Very active and well-known in the Frederick community, Dr. Wannemacher served as president, vice president, on the board of directors, and most recently the legislative chair and newsletter editor of Frederick Chapter 636 of AARP; he has served on the Frederick County Commission of Aging since 2007; National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE); newsletter editor for Frederick Chapter 409 NARFE; United Seniors of Maryland; Institute for Learning in Retirement; Officer (Tiler), Chair of the Lapsation Committee and Permanent Benefactor of Frederick Lodge 684, BPO Elks; and a long-time member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
During his long career in biochemisty and his extensive community involvement, Dr. Wannemacher received numerous awards recognizing his outstanding achievements.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his loving sister, Janet Stephens, of New Jersey and her family; his step-children, Gary T. Clem of Kearneysville, W. Va., Linda Ankney of Cumberland, and Richard Ankney and wife, Jean, of Virginia Beach; as well as numerous step-grandchildren; and step-great-grandchildren.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Carol F. Wannemacher in 1969; and his second wife, Charlotte B. Wannemacher in 2003.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, October 11, 2012 at Stauffer Funeral Homes, P.A., 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. Funeral services will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday, October 12 from the funeral home chapel. Officiating will be Dr. Michael O'Donnell, Pastoral Care Coordinator at Evangelical Lutheran Church.
Interment will follow at Resthaven Memorial Gardens.
