Dr. Michael Joseph McCreery, 70, of Woodsboro, Maryland, passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by his loving wife and family on September 24, 2016 and was welcomed into the arms of Jesus Christ, whom he asked to be his Lord and Savior at a very young age.
Mike was born in Waukegan, IL to Robert B. McCreery and Margaret E. Webber on December 19, 1945. Mike graduated from Xenia High School in 1964 and went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia and a Doctoral Degree in Chemistry from Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. Mike joined the Army Medical Department of the United States Army as an officer in 1973. Mike served his country in many scientific capacities throughout his 20 year career, retiring as a Lt Colonel. Mike received numerous awards and citations for his leadership achievements. For many years, Mike enjoyed teaching in the scientific community, sharing experiences at Emory University School of Medicine, George Washington University School of Medicine, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, Hood College and most recently University of Maryland School of Medicine. Mike has numerous publications, patents and medical research achievements.
Mike was a devoted Christian that expressed his love and faith through music as the musical director and worship leader at Fredericktowne Baptist Church for more than a dozen years. Sailing with The Boyz Sailing Club was one of his passions. Some of his happiest times were the holidays and spending time with his family and friends at his home in Lake Anna, Virginia.
Mike is survived by his loving wife Susan “Hobson” McCreery, five daughters; Laura Mott and her husband Tim of Smithfield, VA, Heather Adair and her husband Rob of Garland, TX, Rachel Emerson and her husband Donny of Waynesville, OH, Sarah Cowles and her husband Dean of Powhatan, VA, Megan Holbrook of Loveland, OH; his two sons; Paul Porreca and his wife Laura of Adamstown, MD, and Billy Prettyman and his wife Shelley of Frederick, MD. His two sisters, Susan Adair and her husband Richard of Dallas, TX and Sharon Walthall and her husband Gary of Xenia, OH. Mike has 18 grandchildren; McKenzie, Samuel, Aldona and Naomi Mott, Teagan, Sheamus, Ruxton and Season Adair, Nicholas, Miles and Owen Emerson, Grace Cowles, Lyla and Stella Holbrook, Julia Lindhorst, Erin and Nicholas Porreca, and Colt Prettyman. Many nieces, nephews and special loving friends including “Riley Boy”.
Mike is preceded in death by his mother, Margaret E. McCreery, father Robert B. McCreery and his sister Jill McCreery Dunlap.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday, October 1, 2016, at Frederick Towne Baptist Church, 8645 Biggs Ford Road, Walkersville, MD. Pastor Gary A. Byers will officiate. Final resting place ceremonies will follow at Rest Haven in Frederick, Maryland.
The family will receive friends from 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm – 8:00 pm on Friday, September 30, 2016 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, Maryland 301-663-1690.
Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, Central Virginia Chapter or the UMBF (University of Maryland, Baltimore Foundation) in support of lung cancer research and education in the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine.
