Dr. Louis Liljedahl

d. January 4, 2012

Dr. Louis Allen Liljedahl, 82, Farm Equipment Specialist.

Lou Liljedahl, a retired engineer with the USDA Agricultural Research Service at Beltsville, MD, who was active in church and community service, died peacefully on January 4th, 2012 after a long battle with several illnesses.

Dr. Liljedahl was born in Essex, IA.  He was educated at the University of Minnesota and Iowa State University, where he earned a Ph.D. in Agricultural Engineering.

His career began in private industry in Nebraska and he joined the USDA in 1953.  He worked on research projects at St. Paul, MN, and Ames, IA, prior to coming to the USDA in Beltsville in 1959, where he served in a variety of assignments.  Dr. Liljedahl served as Manager of the Agricultural Wind Energy research program, as the National Program Staff Specialist for farm machinery, and as chief of several laboratories at Beltsville, the last one being the Sensing Systems Laboratory. In addition, he taught courses in agricultural engineering as well as a popular course in energy technology and energy policy at the University of Maryland for a number of years.  He was probably best known for his early work on automatic control of farm tractors and his later work on pesticide application equipment.

Dr. Liljedahl had been a member of several technical and engineering societies and Gamma Sigma Delta, an agricultural science honorary.

As a member of Colesville Presbyterian Church he was both an elder and a deacon, and he served in similar capacities at other Presbyterian churches previously. Church service included leading adult education, outreach, and evangelism programs. His work as a Cub Scout leader was especially rewarding. During the last decade, fighting the encroachment of gambling into Maryland was a particular passion.

He was predeceased by his youngest son, Eric Allen Liljedahl and one granddaughter. Survivors include his wife, Joan Wood Liljedahl of Adamstown, MD, two daughters, Greta McKinney of Portland, OR, and Katrina Reynolds of Ijamsville, MD, and a son Karl Liljedahl of Philadelphia PA. In addition, he is survived by seven grandchildren.
