Dr. LeRoy "Red" Davis

February 12, 1925 — November 19, 2015

On Nov 19th, 2015, LeRoy “Red” Thomas Davis peacefully passed away at home.  He was surrounded by his loving family.  LeRoy Thomas Davis was born on Feb. 12th 1925, in New Castle, Pa. He was the son of LeRoy F. and Ann Mariah Stewart Davis.

The Davis family moved to Frederick Maryland in 1933 where he attended and graduated from Frederick High School in 1942.  Following graduation he attended Westminster College in New Wilmington, Pa. With the onset of WW II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served as Ensign on the USS Niagara in the Pacific Theater from 1943 through 1946.  Before going overseas he attended Bethany College in Bethany, W. Va. for Naval training. This is where he met his soon to be wife, Sandra Lee Jones of Uniontown, Pa.

After his discharge, LeRoy got his Bachelor’s of Science degree from Westminster College in 1948.  From there, he and his bride, Sandra, went to Syracuse N. Y. He received his Masters of Science in Zoology in 1951 at Syracuse University and continued his education through 1954.  He was awarded his first doctorate, a P.H.D. in Physiology from Syracuse University. His passion and love for learning and teaching led to a job as an instructor in the Dept. of Physiology at N.Y. Medical College in New York City from 1954 through 1957.

Again the learning bug bit, and he enrolled in NYMC as a student of medicine receiving his M.D. in 1961.  Returning to his home in Frederick, he served as a family physician with doctor B.O. Thomas Jr. until 1972.  Unable to resist his love of teaching, he became an assistant professor at the University of Maryland, serving as an associate director of the Dept. of Family Medicine from 1972 through 1978.  He was also the director of residency for the Dept. of Family Medicine.  Between 1978 and 1982 Dr. Davis was a Clinical Professor in the Dept. of Family Medicine, as well as having returned to private practice in Frederick. His many honors include having served as the president of the Frederick County Medical Society, Vice President for Western Md Academy of Family Practice, and a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice.

LeRoy is survived by his son Thomas, and daughters Lynne Whitlock and Barbara Leishman, their spouses, Cathleen, Chuck and Gary.  He is also survived by his grandchildren Emily Bukoski and Will Davis, Devon Gleeson and Terra Falconer, Andrew and Christina Leishman-and his great granddaughter, Piper Falconer.

Red’s lifelong commitment to learning and teaching and serving the community has left a legacy of love and empathy among the many friends, family members, associates, students and patients, whose lives have been touched and enriched by his presence in the world.  He will be deeply missed.

Memorial contributions may be made to The Community Foundation of Frederick County, 312 East Church St., Frederick, Md. under the “Dr. LeRoy T. Davis Memorial Scholarship Fund”.
