Dr. Henry James Hearn, Jr., 84, of Walkersville, Maryland passed away Wednesday, September 7, 2011 at his home. He was the husband of Marion MacLean Hearn, his wife of 60 years.

Born February 24, 1927 in Buffalo, NY, he was the son of the late Henry, Sr. and Ella Lowach Hearn.

Dr. Hearn served his country in the U.S. Navy where he was stationed at Brooklyn Navy Yard . It was there that he met and married his wife Marion who was a USO Hostess.

Dr . Hearn graduated from the Univers i ty of Buffalo with a BA and MA and from the University of Buffalo
School of Medic
i ne with a Ph.D.

Dr. Hearn held numerous University teaching positions early in his career before entering the research
field. Dr
. Hearn had a long and distinguished career as a scientist for the National Cancer Institute at Ft.
Detrick and was a guest scientist at Microbiological Research Establishment, Porton, England by
invitation of the British Government sponsored by the U.S. Defense Department. Dr. Hearn returned to
Ft. Detrick to assume duties as Chief of the Microbiology Research Division
. Dr. Hearn produced an
extensive list of scientific publications and presentations. Dr. Hearn retired from NCI in 1990 and was
later appointed to the Institutional Biosafety Committee

He was past president of Spring Garden Estates Civic Association, a member of NARFE, American Legion Post #282. He loved to play poker with his “buddies”, collect old cars, tools, and ride tractors around the farm.

In addition to his wife he is survived by his children Henry J. Hearn, III , Wendy Hearn Dixon and Melissa Hearn Clabaugh and husband David all of Walkersville, his grandchildren Sean Remsburg and wife Carole, Brad Remsburg and wife Julia, Ryan Clabaugh, Nick Clabaugh, Tyler Dixon, Kyle Dixon and great granddaughters Brianna and Leah Remsburg and a brother Bruce Hearn and wife Jane of PA.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, September 12, at 11:00 am, from the St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Walkersville, MD., with Pastor Mark Foucart officiating

Interment will be private.
