Dr. George Wood, Sr.

Dr. George D. Wood, Sr., 89 of Frederick, Maryland passed away on Tuesday, June 5, 2012 at Homewood at Crumland Farms. He was the husband of the late Gracie L. Wood, whom he married on July 10, 1948.
He was born February 10, 1923 in Concord, VA one of five children of the late William Floyd Wood and Mary Catherine Wood.
He graduated from Brookville High School in 1939 and then migrated to Washington, DC where he found employment with A&P Groceries
He served in the US Army from January 7, 1942 to December 20, 1945. He served overseas with the 326 Glider Regiment. After his discharge, George served four years as a sheet metal apprentice in Washington, DC. Sheet metal drafting courses at the Bell Vocational High School were included in the apprentice program.
Following a back injury and utilizing the G.I. Bill, George entered the University of Maryland and graduated with a B.S. and an M.S. in Dairy Husbandry. He was employed by the University of Maryland Cooperative Extension Service for 27 years. He served as an Extension Agent in a variety of rolls in several counties. With the aide of sabbatical leave, George obtained a Doctor of Education at North Carolina State University at Raleigh. He retired January 31, 1981 from the extension office.
He is survived by his four children, Linda, Delores, Deborah and George Daniel (Dan) and Dan’s wife Elina, seven grandchildren, Celie, Jeremy, Timothy, Susan, Nelly, George III and Alexander, two beloved sisters, Evelyn and Emily.
He is preceded in death by a brother William and a sister Frances.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, June 8 at 1:00PM at Homewood at Crumland Farms, 7407 Willow Road, Frederick, MD with Rev. Suzanne Morris officiating.
