Dr. Frederick L. Dunn, Jr. passed away at peacefully at his home on January 31st.
Born in Washington, DC, on December 30, 1922, he was the son of Frederick L Dunn and Ida Isabel Williams Dunn who preceded him in death.
His wife of 50 years, Janet Griffith Dunn, preceded him in death in 1995.
He is survived by his daughter, Janet Dunn Cumblidge, and her husband, David G. Cumblidge of Hagerstown, Md.
In addition, he is survived by his brother, Raymond Eugene Dunn of Gaithersburg, Md. and grandchildren, Mary Cumblidge Hessong and husband Daniel Hessong of Hagerstown, Md; Randall Lee Cumblidge and wife Mikaela Barbour Cumblidge of Clarksburg, Wv, and Matthew David Cumblidge of Hagerstown, Md. He is further survived by one great granddaughter, Elizabeth Grace Hessong and several nieces and nephews.
Upon graduation from Central High School in Washington, DC, in 1942, he enrolled in college. He interrupted his education to enlist in the Navy where he served as a Pharmacist’s Mate in Hawaii. While in the Navy, he attended classes at Franklin & Marshall College and at the University of Pennsylvania. After the war, he resumed his education at the University of Maryland where he completed his BA in Education in 1948, his Masters’ in 1951 and Doctorate in 1959.
He married his childhood sweetheart, Janet Elizabeth Griffith, on March 23, 1946.
Dr. Dunn taught at several county schools and was the Special Assistant to the Superintendent in charge of Desegregation of Montgomery County Public Schools in 1955. He was the first principal of Robert E. Peary High School in Rockville in 1960 where he started the Robert E. Peary Pipe Band in 1961. Many of the students continued to play after graduation and the MacMillan Pipe Band was formed. The grade 5 competition band was renamed in 2014 to the MacMillan-Dunn Pipe Band.
After his retirement in 1976 he cared for his elderly parents and mother-in-law. He enjoyed spending time at the family’s summer home at White Point Beach on the Potomac River near Leonardtown, Md. where he loved to crab and fish. He was active in several community organizations and served on the scholarship committee for Central High School. He was a member of the National Stansbury-Dawson Lodge #12.
The family will receive friends from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, February 7, 2017 at Stauffer Funeral Home, 1621 Opossumtown Pike, Frederick, MD 21702. Masonic services will begin at 2 p.m. with funeral services to follow.
Interment will be private.
