Dr. Ching Ching (Monica) Chiu, 72, of Gaithersburg, Maryland, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, May 13, 2013. A lifelong non-smoker, she fought a courageous battle with non-small cell lung cancer. She was the wife of Dr. Tony M. Chiu, Chemistry Professor Emeritus at Frederick Community College. They were married for 39 years, and would have celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary this July.
Born April 1, 1941, in Manila, Philippines, she was the daughter of the late Yen Tim Chua and Cha Tan.
Ching Ching earned a B.S. in Chemical Engineering (Summa Cum Laude) from the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, Philippines. She earned an M.S. in Organic Chemistry from the University of California, Santa Barbara and a Ph.D. in Physical Organic Chemistry (Phi Kappa Phi) from Iowa State University.
She spent the majority of her professional life working as a senior manager focused on Regulatory Affairs and Quality Assurance in the drug approval process for numerous pharmaceutical companies. Outside of work, she and her husband loved to travel, having visited over 23 countries and 40 states. Most important to her was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Ching Ching is survived by her husband, Tony, and two children, Stan Chiu and wife Kathryn Stallings of Montclair, NJ and Joyce Whang and husband Tom of Walnut Creek, CA, as well as three grandchildren, Eliza, Kylie and Nicholas.
She is also survived by sisters, Pacita Ong (Philippines), Keng Keng Lua (Philippines), Evelyn Tseng (New York), Kathy Tsai (New York), Ying Ying Ong (Canada) and brother, Yong Yong Ong (Philippines) in addition to a number of nieces and nephews.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son, David, her sister Hong Hong Ong and brother Kim Kim Ong.

Funeral services for family and close friends will be held at Grace United Church of Christ, 25 East 2nd Street, Frederick, MD, on Friday, May 17 at 10:30 AM with The Rev. Philip N. Curran officiating.
Interment will be at Resthaven Memorial Gardens in Frederick, MD on Saturday, May 18.
